Brett was rushed to the ER, and it took nearly two hours before he was wheeled out with all kinds of tubes attached to him, an oxygen mask on his nose, and a blood oxygen monitor clipped to his finger.
Actually, Liam had always known that Brett's health wasn't great, but he didn't expect it to be this bad, with even his heart having problems.
The attending doctor came out with a stack of medical records for the family to sign.
"His family isn't here. I'm his assistant. Can I sign on their behalf?"
The doctor wiped his fogged-up glasses and said, "His condition is so serious, and his family isn't here?"
Liam was embarrassed to talk about Brett's family situation and could only awkwardly smile. The doctor's expression became solemn, which made Liam worried.
"Can I take a look at this medical record?"
"You can. I'll tell you his specific condition first and then have him sign and fingerprint it when Brett wakes up."
The doctor opened the computer, entered the patient's information, and finally displayed a full screen of CT images.
The doctor flipped to a few pictures of the lungs and then handed Liam a sheet from the middle of the stack.
Liam took it with a heavy heart, looking at the diagnosis on the record, his breathing becoming rapid.
"Doctor, could this be a misdiagnosis?"
The doctor shook his head, his face also heavy, "If you don't believe it, you can wait for him to wake up and have it rechecked. After all, your boss should know his health best. Don't be upset, medical science has advanced, and cancer research has made significant progress. Although it can't be completely cured, as long as he persists in chemotherapy, receives treatment in the hospital, maintains a good mood, and has regular checkups, he can still live for another ten or eight years."
"How long can he live if he doesn't get treatment?" Liam asked, trembling.
The doctor shook his head, "The last untreated patient didn't make it past three years."
Liam clenched the medical record, staring at the big words on it advanced lung cancer.
He knew how long one could live with cancer. Initially, Izabella took her medication on time but still didn't make it past three years.
As for Brett, why did he get lung cancer?
Over the years, Liam had always worried about his health, making sure he ate on time every day. He even considered that he might have stomach cancer but neglected the possibility of lung cancer.
It seemed not so surprising that Brett would get lung cancer. After all, since Izabella's death, he smoked and drank, and the ashtray was never empty.
The doctor suddenly received a call from a patient.
"I have a patient coming in temporarily. Why don't you go to the ward and see your boss first, and when he wakes up, you can call me."
Liam nodded stiffly, holding the medical record, and went to the ward. Only then did he snap back to reality, feeling a chill throughout his body.
He walked to the bedside and looked at Brett's emaciated, pale face and could only think of one thing.
What goes around comes around, and no one can escape it. Izabella's words "live until you die" had tortured him enough, but he didn't expect the worse to come.
The person he had always hoped for had returned, but he was now diagnosed with lung cancer.
Even if it could be cured, he would only live another ten years. Brett was 33 years old, and at 43, he was destined not to grow old with Izabella.
For a man in his thirties, it's the prime time of his career. This age is the golden period, without the immaturity of the twenties, and not as smooth and worldly as the forties. But now, Brett's disease had become his biggest obstacle, possibly insurmountable.
Liam felt heartbroken, regretful and wondered how Brett could have gotten this disease.
Liam sat in the chair, took out his phone to look at something, but didn't know what to look at, just staring blankly at the date on the phone, then looked up at the IV bag hanging above.
Before Patrick Windham died a year ago, he divided his main assets in half, giving half to Nathaniel and half to Brett.
Over the years, the two brothers had been constantly fighting, and Brett, with his fierce and decisive methods, had managed to secure 40% of the shares from various shareholders.
But if these people knew that Brett had lung cancer, what would the situation become?
And...
Liam thought of the doctor's question about the "patient's family."
If something happened to Brett, who would come to sign? Weren't all those people hoping for him to leave?
