After Divorcing my Captain Husband (Chloe and Michael) novel Chapter 596

And then there was the miscarriage.

These were the painful memories she was determined to keep hidden from him.

Her health had always been delicate, and the idea of taking emergency contraception worried her.

Since she had never been particularly fertile, and with Jones constantly reassuring her that there was no need to stress, she decided not to take the pill.

But, after some time, she started experiencing bouts of nausea and a general feeling of discomfort.

When she finally went to the doctor, she discovered she was pregnant.

At that time, she and Jones hadn't had their wedding, nor had they registered their marriage. If she gave birth, the child would be considered illegitimate.

Maggie feared that being pregnant before marriage would make Jones think he could manipulate her, so she didn't dare tell him or his family.

Then, one day, while playfully roughhousing with Jones, she accidentally lost the baby.

Afterward, she wasn't sure whether to feel relieved or devastated.

The doctor told her that she had always had difficulty conceiving, and now it would be even harder.

This became a painful memory for Maggie. Back then, Jones had comforted her, saying it was okay, that even if they couldn't have children, they could always adopt.

But now, he was using this against her, threatening her with it.

Back then, she was too frail and underweight, which made it difficult for her to conceive.

At that time, she and Jones were dating, but they hadn't yet reached the point of discussing marriage.

Still, she was always anxious about it as Jones' family placed a lot of importance on continuing the family line.

Maggie was worried that if she couldn't marry him, she wouldn't be able to secure permanent residency. So, she secretly went to the hospital for various tests and took all kinds of supplements, hoping to increase her chances of getting pregnant.

It was a mistake, an unfortunate lapse in judgment. That time, she and Jones hadn't taken any precautions. She had thought about taking the morning-after pill afterward, but then she remembered how hard it was for her to get pregnant in the first place. Jones had even mentioned that the pill might mess with her body, making it even harder to conceive.

Worried that it might ruin her chances of ever having a child, she decided against it.

But who could've guessed that one time would lead to a pregnancy?

When she found out, she was incredibly cautious, doing everything she could to protect the baby. But her body was too fragile, and despite all her efforts, she lost it.

The miscarriage left her heartbroken for a long time. The doctor had also mentioned getting pregnant again might be next to impossible.

James was the only son of the Dale family, and with his father having died in battle years ago, she knew how much it meant to him to have a child to carry on the family name. The thought of him finding out she might never be able to give him a child terrified her.

James already seemed distant, like he didn't want to be with her. If he found out about her situation, her chances with him would be as good as gone.

"Jones, do you really have to be so heartless?"

"You were the one who turned cold first," Jones shot back, his words cutting her deep.

She bit her lip, trying to hold herself together before finally asking, "How much do you want?"
