"Nothing. I was just chatting with someone.” Freya turned off the screen and placed her phone on the table.
Catherine stared at Freya for a few seconds. She had taken a few glances at Freya’s phone just now and vaguely saw that the profile picture was of a man. She could not see the earlier messages clearly, but she saw the last two sentences and found them strange. "Do you have a boyfriend?"
"Huh?" Freya widened her eyes. "I'm in the laboratory every day. Who would I be dating?”
"You’re not dating, but you’re always on your phone sending messages."
Catherine started recounting. "When we were having lunch at the canteen, you kept chatting with him. You were also chatting during your break time when I went to the laboratory to look for you. I don’t know what the contents of your chat were, but you were smiling at the phone for one second, then pouting angrily and looking worried the next second. How is this situation different compared to the time you first started dating?"
Freya was stunned. That seemed to be the case. Although she and Ryan did not meet every day lately,
they had been chatting every single day. It was all about trivial stuff in their lives. Sometimes, Ryan would reach out to her first and share the things that happened to him. Over time, she got used to it. She would even contact him first or send pictures of her coffee and canteen lunch to him.
However, she did not think it was weird.
She had just gone through a divorce. Apart from the child, her life was pretty empty.
Catherine had her boyfriend and children. Eliza was always busy filming movies, and she was not free lately. Chatting with Ryan filled up the empty spaces i n her life. Sometimes, she would not feel so lonely too.
"Cathy, you're overthinking. I want to date, but you know I'm prioritizing my daughter and career first. Besides, I've experienced failure after failure in my love life. I'm not that courageous anymore."
Freya explained, "I was just chatting with Ryan."
Traces of doubt appeared on Catherine's face. "Freya, could Ryan be... in love with you?"
Freya was speechless. "You're overthinking. We're just ... siblings, okay?"
She wanted to say they were girl best friends, but she had to be careful as Cathy was sharp.
