Bride Behind the Mask novel Chapter 214

Though the man's silhouette had faded from view, Marguerite quickly cleaned the tears at the corner of her eyes.

She sniffled, reaching out for the cash he left behind - a whopping ten thousand dollars.

Was all this money for a cab ride? It was a compensation, she thought.

But what was there to compensate for? Frederick hadn't done anything wrong.

She was the one in the wrong, carrying another man's child, placing Frederick in a more difficult position within the Winston family.

Marguerite rose from her seat and left the restaurant. As soon as she stepped out, a torrential downpour began, accompanied by thunder.

There was no eaves outside the diner, and Marguerite hailed a cab in the rain, taking a good half-hour to find one.

Soaked to the bone and in a pitiful state, she decided to head straight to Miley's apartment, since she didn't want to worry her grandmother.

The taxi struggled to move in the heavy rain, and Marguerite huddled in the backseat, shivering from the cold. But all she felt was cold, and colder still.

The rain pelted against the window, and Marguerite felt utterly helpless.

Images swirled in her mind, weaving a movie where every scene featured Frederick. Yet, the more she thought about him, the lonelier she felt, as if she were the only person left in the world.

Upon reaching Miley's apartment, Marguerite paid the fare and braved the rain to enter the building, weakly knocking on the door.

"Who is it?"

Miley's disgruntled voice came from inside, and she was taken aback when she saw Marguerite.

"Marguerite? Why are you drenched? Don't you carry an umbrella?"

Marguerite stood there, soaked and shivering, with tears streaming down her face. "It's so cold," was all she could say.

Miley quickly pulled Marguerite inside, guiding her towards the bathroom. "Take off your clothes and get in the tub, I'll run you a bath."

As the water gushed from the showerhead, Marguerite slowly undressed and removed her mask, slipping into the bathtub.
