[If you fancy hitting the shops, I'm game to tag along.]

She texted another message, though she knew full well Carol would likely decline.

[No worries, I'm actually doing okay. Maja just rang me up too, but she's swamped as usual. Anyway, I've got my own stuff to deal with here. Gotta go.]

[Alright, you go handle your business.]

Zoey set her phone down, glancing around the office.

She'd been pulling all-nighters for the past two days, and hadn’t gone back home, barely taking time to crash in the break room, freshen up, and change into a clean set of clothes before diving back into the grind.

Now that she had a moment to breathe, her eyes felt like sandpaper.

There was a knock on the door, and in came Elvis, clutching a stack of papers. Spotting Zoey still at her desk, his face registered surprise.

"Have you not gone home in two days?"

"Yeah, I've been trying to clear the deck of this month's backlog."

Elvis furrowed his brow with concern, "Zoey, Ms. Pennyfeather didn't expect you to work yourself to the bone like this. By the time she gets back, you'll be running on fumes."

Zoey didn't respond, standing up with a playful tone, "Fine, I'll head home to rest now. The paperwork I've finished is on the left - take a gander when you get a chance."

He hadn't expected her to agree so readily and just nodded.

Grabbing her purse, Zoey headed out - not towards home but to the local bar. She needed to find Tyler.

It wasn't about whatever mess Fitch had gotten into; she wanted the lowdown on the Miller drama.

Tyler had hinted before that the Miller family were in hot water, having caught wind of it even before the news broke.

She called Tyler as she approached the bar. She had his number saved, but Tyler obviously didn't have hers, judging by his flippant response, "Who's this?"

"Tyler, it's me, Zoey."

He paused, glancing sideways at Fitch, who was accompanied by Wendy.

It was Wendy's first formal encounter with Fitch since returning stateside. She was the picture of demure coyness, stealing glances at Fitch at every opportunity.

Tyler knew his cousin well. Wendy had been smitten with Fitch for ages. Considering Fitch's general aversion to women, she'd confessed her feelings once before heading abroad, faced rejection, and hadn't pressed further.
