The mood visibly darkened as he made a phone call.

After hanging up, Nolan, sitting across from him, asked, "How's mommy?"

"She's had her dinner; let's eat ours."

"She's mad, daddy, that's not good."

Fitch felt a lump in his throat, thinking if it hadn't been for Nolan interrupting last night, his wife would have probably been calling him endearing names by now. He playfully ruffled Nolan's hair.

"She's not mad, just a little misunderstanding last night. Nolan, promise daddy if you hear anything again, you stay in your room, okay? Don't come out, got it?"

"Why?"

"Because if you don't come out, mommy will only get closer to us faster."

A spark of understanding lit up Nolan's eyes, and he nodded slowly. "Okay, daddy."

Fitch was pleased.

Ever since the incident at Mr. Jones' daycare, he hadn't let Nolan go back, and Zoey had quit her job there, now unemployed.

She slept until noon and was woken by the doorbell.

Rushing downstairs, she opened the door to find Fitch standing outside.

She wanted to slam the door shut, but Fitch stopped it with his hand.

"Zoey, can we talk, please?"

Feeling uneasy, Zoey still let him in.

Sitting on the couch, she avoided looking at him. "What about?"

Fitch held a small gift in his hand, homemade snacks he made for Nolan and one for Zoey.

"I made these. Try some."

Zoey felt even more uncomfortable, sensing Fitch's unusual tenderness, noticing the imprint of fingers on his cheek.
