He lowered his head, and pinched her chin, forcing her to look up at him.

"Why are you crying?"

Maja kept her eyes closed, her teeth clenched, refusing to speak.

She seemed thinner than before, her cheeks more hollowed. She already had a small face, but at that point he could almost break her chin with a slight squeeze.

Ian suddenly let her go, puzzled by the sudden surge of sympathy.
