When she walked out of the room and into the hallway, the maid grabbed her and filled her in on the real deal.

"Doc came by yesterday. He said that in the best case scenario, Mr. Pennyfeather's got a month tops. Ms. Pennyfeather, Mr. Pennyfeather's been calling your name a lot. He lost pretty much everything he had. He's in a bad way, and I don't think he wants you to see him like this. It's probably best you don't come back."

The maid was trying to look out for Neil, and Maja got it. When she was seen out, the maid had one more thing to say.

"We were going to pick a plot for Mr. Pennyfeather, but he said he wants you to pick. You should probably start looking. I don't think we have much time."

Maja wanted to say something, but she was tongue-tied.

She nodded awkwardly and left, feeling light-headed.

Her car had a flat tire. It looked like she ran over a nail; it was wedged in there.

"Ms. Pennyfeather, why don't you drive the Pennyfeather family's car?"

So she took off in that, leaving her clunker behind.
