Skylar could empathize with Penelope. Having known each other for many years, Skylar was extremely familiar with the latter's family.
Penelope's mother, in particular, was the epitome of having a sharp tongue. Whenever Skylar went out with Penelope, the older woman would always ask, “Will your mother ever be released from prison? Did you visit her? Do you still hate her?”
Skylar would be peppered with questions that added salt to her wounds.
When Skylar came out with Penelope in tow, she noticed the paparazzi taking pictures of them from afar. Hence, she waved in their direction, gesturing for them to stop.
It went without saying that the paparazzi ignored her signal. Regardless of how hard she waved her hand, nothing would get in their way of clicking their cameras furiously.
Right when she managed to hail a taxi, the driver was shocked by the sight of her. He exclaimed, “You're actually taking a taxi. I can't believe how down-to-earth a superstar like you is!”
Skylar gave the driver her address. Since Tobias was unlikely to come home that evening, she planned to take Penelope there. She didn't care what was going through his mind. The thought of him abandoning her at the parking lot continued to infuriate her.
As the drunk Penelope leaned against Skylar's shoulder, she let out a burp and began speaking with the stench of alcohol around her. “Do you know how much I envy you, Skylar? I can't believe how good your life is. To be honest, I still can't bring myself to forget Brayden. I'm definitely going to make him pay for ruining my entire life.”
Some time ago, Skylar had run into Brayden. She also heard that his wife was given two-thirds of his assets in their divorce. The fact that she had been planning to exact revenge on him was the reason why she initially tolerated Brayden's infidelity.
With Penelope pining for Brayden still, Skylar kept news of the latter's divorce from her friend. She was worried that Penelope would attempt a reconciliation despite declaring her hatred for him.
Before she could retrieve her key, Skylar heard a noise behind the door. At the same time, her back was about to break from supporting the drunk Penelope, who wasn't cooperative at all. With sweat covering her forehead, Skylar felt as if all the alcohol she had drunk earlier had already evaporated from her body.
Thinking that it was Madelyn who was getting the door, Skylar felt puzzled, for the former was usually asleep at that hour. Under normal circumstances, only family members would wait up for one's return. Moreover, Madelyn was also someone who stuck to a strict routine.
If Skylar were to come home past ten, Madelyn would definitely go to bed first, as ten had inadvertently become her self-dictated time to get off work.
Thus, Skylar was stunned to see Tobias when the door opened. With her grip around Penelope tightening, she stood motionless at the door, showing no intention of entering. Consequently, an inexplicable tension descended upon the air around them.
“I thought you weren't coming back tonight.” Worried that Penelope could no longer stay on her feet, Skylar figured it would be wise to bring her into the house first. She then reminded Penelope to watch where she was going, for the latter could barely walk in a straight line.
With her cheeks burning red and having lost all inhibitions, Penelope pointed a finger at Tobias' face as if to challenge him. It was something no one in their right mind would ever dare do.
“Did you go out and drink just because I'm not coming home?” Tobias was not in the mood to hide his displeasure. He was, after all, someone conservative who didn't like his woman to drink or smoke. The fact that Skylar didn't have any of these bad habits made her perfect for him.
