In my impression, the Dunn family has always been a rigid family who only pursued a suitable match. They even drove Teresa away for the sake of their ideal granddaughter-in-law and allowed Teresa to set me up.
Benjamin's grandfather frowned and said seriously, "You are a beautiful girl, but you are not suitable for my grandson."
In my heart, I found it ridiculous, and my eyes inadvertently fell on Benjamin, who was talking with another man at the side. He was noble and handsome, but it did not mean that he was my type.
He seemed to have sensed something and looked at me with his eyebrows slightly pressed together. I smiled and then said to Benjamin's grandfather, "Your grandson is indeed a handsome man, but he is not suitable for me."
The old man froze for a moment, and the atmosphere became slightly awkward. Fortunately, the party began, the lights at the party converged, and Stanley appeared on the other side, leading his wife and daughter to the party.
I hadn't seen Laurelie for quite a long while. She dyed her hair back to the original black color and was wearing a slim white dress with a jade bracelet on her wrist.
Her every move was elegant and charming, like a girl walking out of a poem. Her tender skin and intoxicating features were like the cherry blossoms in March, which made it hard for people to believe that a few months back, she could've died on the battlefield.
I tilted my head and secretly looked at Zack. There was a flash of surprise in his deep eyes, but soon it dived back beneath the surface.
Laurelie obediently followed by the side of Stanley. When Stanley was talking to someone in the crowd, she slipped to us. She sat down and said with a smile, "I hate these parties the most. If it weren't for the fact that it was held for me niece, I'd be long gone."
"You're beautiful," I complimented with a smile.
I was really amazed by her beauty. Upon hearing my words, Laurelie smiled and said, "So are you. This dress is really beyond imagination."
As soon as I heard this, I smiled and asked, "I haven't heard anything about you recently. What have you been up to?"
Laurelie shook her head, took a glass of red wine, and explained, "Not much. After I got hurt half a year ago, my uncle wouldn't take me on any mission with him. So I thought I'd roll with Lawrence. But he's afraid of our mother so he also kicked me out. I felt so boring staying in City B so I went to Europe to climb mountains with Braydon. I just came back one day ago."
Zack suddenly asked coldly, "Climbing mountains?"
As soon as he finished his words, a man in his late twenties suddenly appeared and sat next to Laurelie. He took the glass of red wine from her hand and drank it before stuffing it back into Laurelie's hand. He narrowed his eyes and asked with a smile, "I just heard Cherry mention my name."
"Speaking of the devil." Laurelie looked at his hands on her shoulders impatiently and said, "Take your hands away. My mom's gonna ask you to marry me again if she sees this."
He rubbed her head and held it in his arms, saying, "I'll marry you then, it's not like I got anything to lose in it. I've long wanted to have a taste of this cherry!"
Laurelie said faintly, "Seems like you've forgotten how I threw you on the ground."
Hearing this, the man in front of me immediately let go of her. Then I heard someone calling, "Braydon, come over and I have something to talk with you."
"Well, there she is, your mother and she's calling me over to discuss our wedding." After finishing his words, he left with a smile.
Laurelie explained indifferently, "He is Braydon. He is my sister's best friend. He has been responsible for my mistakes since I was a child."
She raised her head and gulped down the red wine left in Braydon's glass. "Emma, I need to ask my uncle some questions. I'll be back soon."
After she left, I said to Zack on one side, "I don't know how to put this. You and I missed each other many years ago. Now you finally meet a girl who likes you, and you and I both know that you have a few feelings for her, so you should cherish her. If you continue to be like this, suppressing your own feelings when even you yourself don't want to, the same thing that happened between me and Benjamin and you will happen again. Don't wait until Laurelie gets together with another man and regret."
After a long time, Zack asked, "Em, do you think I like her?"
I asked with a smile, "Why shouldn't you?" Zack was silent for a long time before he said, "Maybe you don't understand. I am 11 years older than her. I can be her father for all I care, but we really can't get along with each other in terms of character. Besides, she is a wild horse. It's not me who can tame her. I am not the harbor that she needs. I admit that I'm like a conservative old man and I might not understand love. But she is different. She is too sensitive and she asks too much."
Zack lowered his head to think before continuing, "I can't afford to give her what she wants. She doesn't understand what I want. She will understand it later."
Zack always refused to accept Laurelie with the excuse that she's too young to understand.
I looked at Benjamin in the distance silently. Zack said, "Em, she doesn't intend to be with me now."
"You mean she's already given up on you?" I asked in surprise.
Zack looked at Laurelie with shining eyes in the distance. "Hmm," he said softly, "I turned her down that night."
I suddenly remembered the night before he left the police station when she took a helicopter abroad to get back to Zack.
What on earth happened that night?
Zack seemed to have read my mind. He smiled slightly and said, "I rejected her with the most vicious words I've ever said in my life, and then I gave her up again six months ago when we were at the sea. What else do you expect her to do?"
"It's all my fault." I looked away from Benjamin and said in a low voice, "It's also their fault."
