Ellis was a child, so he didn't understand the contradictions between adults. I carefully thought about my wording and said, "I'll take you home tonight, okay? And I'll be the one telling you bedtime stories tonight."
Ellis got off me and ran into the arms of Benjamin. His eyes were filled with tears. He held Benjamin's neck and said, "I want to live with my mother all the time, but why can't I? Why can that boy do that?"
As he spoke, tears flowed down his cheeks.
I panicked all of a sudden. Sean, however, still made fun of him. "Ha, our little Dunn is jealous!"
"You are a man, don't cry."
Benjamin's face was cold, and he scolded again, "I see one more drop of tear, I will let your uncle take you away."
Despite his words, he still held Ellis tightly with both hands. At this moment, I didn't know what to do.
Anthony suddenly stood up. "I'll wait for you outside."
I wanted to keep him here, but Anthony shook his head and left.
His back was lonely, and I really felt sorry for him.
But I felt even more so for my own son.
"Emma, who's that boy?" Sean looked at his back appreciatingly and said, "He's got a quite hard backbone, huh?"
"I adopted him abroad." I felt extreme fatigue coming over me, but still said softly, "Ellis, I'm willing to live with you, but if you live with me, who's gonna live with your father? He's gonna be all alone."
"Also, Anthony was abandoned by his parents when he was a little older than you. Compared to him, you are much luckier. There are some things that I believe you can understand-I love you very much, but also I love Anthony. I hope that you will respect him in the future. Don't refer to him as simply 'that boy'. After all, he is your brother and it's gonna stay that way, He's one of the closest persons to you."
Ellis sobbed. I pulled out a piece of tissue to wipe his tears and said, "Believe me, I really want to live with you."
When I said this, my eyes met Benjamin's eyes. Ellis asked in a low voice, "Are you afraid that Benjamin would feel lonely, so you let me live with him? Is it because I'm not with you that you brought Anthony home?"
"Yes," I said with a smile. "And when the time comes, you'll need the same thing from each other."
Just then, the steak was placed on the table. I got up and said, "It's snowing outside. Anthony might catch a cold."
Ellis said obediently, "Then get him back."
Ellis was a very sensible child. He could understand the reasons. When I turned around, I heard Sean say to Benjamin, "She's much better than you at this."
Benjamin coolly asked, "Really? And who are you to judge?"
Sean roared, "Jeez, man, chill out!"
It was snowing in City B. I took off the scarf on my neck and covered my hand on Anthony's. Then I said, "Ellis is still young and I know what he said might have hurt your feelings. But I just explained to him who you are, and he now understands."
"He's jealous." Anthony said, "Kids do that, I get it. I'm not pissed or anything."
I was worried that he would get angry, so I felt much better when I heard his words. I rubbed his head, and suggested, "It's pretty cold outside. Let's go in."
Anthony nodded and followed me back to the restaurant. I took him to sit beside Ellis. Maybe Ellis felt that he had done something wrong, so he handed a glass of juice to Anthony ingratiatingly. Anthony lowered his head slightly and suddenly said, "It's not cold outside."
Ellis asked in a soft voice, "I was wondering if it's cold outside and if you were cold." Then, he asked curiously, "How did you know I was thinking about this?"
Squinting his eyes, Anthony answered, "It's all on your face."
"Was it that obvious?" Knowing that Anthony might get impatient with Ellis's endless questions, I interrupted him and said, "Ellis, the steak's gonna get cold."
Hearing that, Ellis quickly started to eat his steak.
After dinner in the evening, Sean proposed to play cards. I had no other schedule, so I held Ellis in my arms and went to a club owned by the Jenkins.
That was because there was no chance that I'd go to a place owned by the Dunns or the Solanges. Sean also suggested that we went to the Jenkins one because it was the newest one in town.
The four of us and two children went to the fifth floor. All the people alongside our way up kept addressing me as President. After we got in the room, Sean said, "You are quite someone now, huh? But how did the Jenkins fall into your hands? I thought their business was going quite well."
I put the child down and sat at the table and explained, "I surely can't reveal the specifics to you, but I know what you really want to know. September is now in Europe. She might now even consider coming back for a few months."
Sean just wanted to know about September's whereabouts, but I couldn't tell him.
Sean sighed and said, "Alright then. Come on, I'm gonna drain all the money from you f*cking loaded president tonight."
Touching the card, I said, "We are loaded? Who's gonna believe the son of the Solange family hasn't got a few million of allowance in his account?"
Sean spat and said, "Son of Solange my a*s. My father only cares about dense and he would be the last one to know even if I died."
