Gorgeous Couple’s Sweet Love novel Chapter 22

Elysia was more than 20 minutes' drive away from the City Hall.

I thought about a lot of things in these twenty minutes.

In just a few days, Steve and I broke up and divorced, ended our short marriage, and experienced the indifference of colleagues, how my own family didn't understand me, and the teasing of neighbors and bystanders.

I felt like my whole life flashed in front of my eyes.

What happened to me was so dramatic and ridiculous.

But I had to live desperately, desperately struggling.

These days, Benjamin was the only ray of sunshine in my life.

In the long winter, he appeared just in time.

So in time that I was immediately captured by him.

I was not stupid..

When a down- and- out woman met a confident, powerful and omnipotent man, she was sure to be captured by him.

As horrifying as it might sound, it was the only way out.

Maybe it was because it was almost the new year, there were a lot of people in the City Hall. Benjamin and I sat on the bench in the corridor and waited.

Benjamin was a little silent and didn't want to talk. He would give me a perfunctory nod when I said something.

His spirit was not high.

I squeezed my finger, and when it turned white, I asked: "Benjamin, do you regret getting married?"

"Huh?"

He gave another perfunctory reply.

I was very sad, and I couldn't figure out his attitude.

I resisted the tension in my heart and opened my mouth to ask: "From this morning until now, your mood has been very depressed...Do you regret it?"

"Do you think I will regret it?"

Benjamin laughed mockingly. He took out the cigarette in his pocket. But as if remembering that it was a public place, he put it back in and said, "I have never regretted what I decided, so don't think too much."

He leaned on the chair with his shoulders loose, and looked at me with admiration, "Emma, your observation skills are still pretty good."

His eyes were endlessly deep.

"Huh? What do you mean?" I wondered.

"After spending some days with you, I could see that your observation skills are excellent. You can guess something from the facial expressions of people. For example, you just said that I was depressed. Indeed, I was thinking about something."

I asked, "What is it?"

"Company business."

Benjamin's voice suddenly became cold.

He raised his hand and patted my face, stroking it ambiguously for a while, and said: "Emma, we will get married today no matter what. Besides, this decision was my own, and I said that you are with me for a better life. So, don't ask any more stupid questions."

He understood my mind, so he was comforting me.

Benjamin was a very careful man.

Maybe because of his gentleness at the moment, I went further to ask, "Benjamin, do

you want a prenup? Let's stay out of each other's business. I won't ask too much of anything from you, even if you have another woman. But I want to be free to have my own life as well."

Benjamin was a domineering man. Some things needed to be explained to him clearly in advance, such as the issue of personal freedom.

He asked me to not ask to much.

I wanted the same promise from him too.

Benjamin glanced at me inexplicably, "Emma, as long as you don't touch my bottom line, I won't ask too much."

I blurted out: "What is your bottom line?" "Deception, concealment, and betrayal."

What the heck? Deception and concealment?

Then what's the point of "minding our own business"?

He asked me not to ask, why did I have to tell him everything?

I asked, "What about you, would you lie to me?"

Sitting on the opposite bench was a couple who leaned on each other and decided to step into the marriage hall. I heard the girl emphatically said: "You said that you will do all the housework after marriage and you will hand in all your salary to me!"

The man immediately coaxed and said: "Yes, my lady." The tone was pampered.

Actually, I thought that girl was really stupid.

How could she expect his man to do housework?

And the salary. That was just a fantasy she was too obessesed with.

Before Steve got married, he promised me in every possible way, but after marriage, he was completely different. He handed each penny to his mother whereas I had to pay for all the living expenses.

I was never a girl to submit to others so I forced him to do housework.

"A stupid question."

Benjamin suddenly scolded me, and I was astonished.

He said coldly: "Know your place."

Know your place. I was hit right in the face by his words and finally woke up.

It was nothing but a deal between me and Benjamin. I was the one who hoped for too much. In short, I crossed a line.

I pursed my lips with a pale face, lowered my head and refused to say anything. Benjamin didn't say anything else either.

I was so stupid that I forgot the indifferent expression of Benjamin last night when he told me not to ask too much. I forgot what he said about the purpose of marriage!

I laughed at myself as if I was an idiot. Getting married meant nothing. It wouldn't bring me and Benjamin closer to each other, not even an inch.

It was nothing but a deal that I only now realized.
