After hearing those words, Agnes felt a bitter tang in her heart. Regardless of what she did now, even if it ended in trouble, Jared would take all the blame upon himself. The more Jared said this, the worse Agnes felt.
Agnes said, "Jared, from now on, whatever happens, I'll tell you first. I won't let you worry like this again."
Jared held her tightly, as if clinging to a treasure he'd thought was lost forever. He couldn't bear to imagine how, when Kearney had taken Agnes hostage, he felt as if he were tied to a grill, with the flames licking at him, every second an agony. Jared couldn't bear to think of anything happening to her.
Wrapped in his real warmth, Agnes suddenly felt incredibly fortunate. In the face of danger, she hadn't fully grasped the risk. But now, with it all behind them, she felt a lingering fear. To have survived was truly a blessing.
But then, something occurred to Agnes. She asked, "Jared, how did you get here? Why were you with Elton?"
Jared explained, "After you vanished, I went to... Mr. Albert. Mr. Albert secretly gathered Elton and others. Kearney had been keeping an eye on Mr. Albert, so he couldn’t make any big moves without raising suspicion. Thankfully, most of the folks at Albert's Arms were still loyal to Mr. Albert. With a secret order from him, Elton rallied the Albert's Arms folks, and that's how we managed to get here on time. Most things went as expected, except for you cracking the code of that letter from twenty years ago. Honestly, Agnes, I was terrified Kearney would do something drastic. You saved us all."
Agnes sighed deeply, "Even though things are clear now, it can't undo what's been done. After all, it's too late. The harm has been caused. A person raised in hatred, it's no surprise they end up this way. The real tragedy is for the godfather, losing two sons at once, and Phenix's situation adds to his worries."
Jared frowned slightly, "Mr. Albert has his plans, we'll see how he deals with Kearney."
Just then, there was a knock on the door. The door wasn't actually closed, just slightly ajar. Hearing the sound, Agnes and Jared both looked towards the door.
It was Elton. Elton happened to see Jared holding Agnes. They were a couple who had been through life and death together; their closeness was natural. But still, Elton couldn't help but feel a twinge of jealousy.
Agnes sat up straight and asked, "Elt, is there something you need?"
Though Agnes called him Elt, only Elton knew how distant that nickname felt. Elton thought it might as well be Mr. Taylor. It showed there was still a hint of resentment between them. Resentment meant there was still a place for him in her heart.
Elton was momentarily lost in thought. But then he snapped back to reality.
Elton, what are you thinking? What are you hoping for? After all these years, you've had no connection with her. And you've told yourself, you wouldn't interfere with her relationship. Coming back this time was just to see her happy. As long as she was happy and joyful, that was all he wished for.
