They'd never guessed that Ada would donate the necklace, right in the middle of the auction!
Impossible!
Glynnis quickly stole a glance at Edith, their eyes met across the room, but neither of them could utter a word!
The unveiling of Alea's piece sent waves of excitement through the crowd.
Industry experts and jewelry enthusiasts leaned in, stretching their necks like giraffes, to catch a glimpse of the legendary designer's sparkling masterpiece.
Thaddeus and Avery, who had long admired Alea, had their eyes lit up at this very moment.
Both men tightened their grip on their bidding panels, ready to join the fray.
"Glynnis, why are you standing? Sit down, can't you see everyone's looking at you?" Elspeth chided as she pulled Glynnis back into her seat.
"Mom, something's gone wrong!" Glynnis slumped back down, her voice trembling.
"What's wrong? What happened?"
"The necklace Ada donated is the one I gave to her."
"You gave it? Where did you get Alea's piece?"
Elspeth was taken aback, then grew furious, "That old hag is squandering a precious gift, and you let her! Are you okay with her slapping you in the face like this? And you, why didn't you give me Alea's piece instead of giving it to that actress? I can't believe I raised you!"
"Mom, that necklace is fake," Glynnis confessed in a shaky voice, a cold sweat breaking on her forehead.
Elspeth's heart skipped a beat, "What did you say? Fake?"
"It was Edith had Alea's apprentice replicate the necklace."
Glynnis stuttered, "Ada wouldn't sign the contract, so I had to resort to this, to try and win her over just like Evadne did. The necklace was a perfect replica, and it was from Alea's lesser-known collection so Ada didn't notice. I knew the truth would come out eventually, but by then, the contract would be signed and it'd be too late for Ada to back out. But I didn't expect her to donate the necklace to the auction! If it's found out, our family's reputation will be ruined!"
"You're an absolute fool!"
Elspeth hissed, her sharp nails digging into Glynnis's arm, "Even if you couldn't give her a real piece, you shouldn't have given her a fake one! If it's found out, the whole Abernathy family will be humiliated, do you understand?"
"It wasn't my idea. Edith suggested it, you can't blame me!" Glynnis pouted, feeling unfairly treated.
"Can't you see Edith is using you?"
Elspeth stomped her foot in frustration, her eyes welling up with tears, "If it's not found out, you'll get the contract and she'll get rid of Evadne; If it's found out, the necklace was given in the name of the Abernathy Group, what does Edith have to lose? She'll walk away scot-free while you clean up the mess!"
Glynnis realized her mistake, cursing herself for being so gullible.
"Mom! What do we do now?"
"We'll have to play it by ear."
Elspeth took a deep breath, steadying herself, "There are so many of Alea's pieces around the world, who's to say this one is fake? Ada didn't notice, and no one else would either!"
Glynnis felt slightly relieved, but she was still worried about being found out.
"I'd like to say a few words about this piece." Ada stood up, microphone in hand, and smiled at the crowd.
Her gaze finally settled on Glynnis, who had turned pale, "I'd like to thank Miss Glynnis, for this necklace was a gift from her."
Evadne casually took out her phone and sent a message to Jason backstage.
The next moment, a spotlight dramatically illuminated Glynnis, who was frozen like a statue.
And on the big screen overhead, there was a close-up of Glynnis's face, capturing every detail of her expression.
Glynnis had no choice but to smile awkwardly, cursing under her breath.
"Although I'm a great fan of Alea's work, I believe in giving back to society and helping those in need, rather than keeping this piece to myself. This aligns with Alea's philosophy when designing her pieces, and as her fan, I want to follow in her footsteps. I hope Miss Glynnis won't mind my decision. I really like the necklace, but I believe it can do more good if it's put to use."
