In the wee hours, the darkness was oppressive.
Evadne was nestled sweetly against Thaddeus, deep in slumber, but the man himself hadn't yet fallen asleep. He was poring over a stack of financial reports and project plans that he had pulled from the nightstand.
Suddenly, there was a knock on the door, followed by the anxious voice of Alva, “Mr. and Mrs. Abernathy, are you asleep?”
Thaddeus, cautious not to wake his beloved, quietly got out of bed and tiptoed to the door.
“Alva, what are you doing up this late?”
“Mr. Abernathy, Mr. Waverley is here!”
“Mr. Waverley? You mean Evadne’s brother Elvis?” Thaddeus was slightly taken aback.
“Yes! He’s in the living room right now; he looks terrible. You better come down quickly!”
Just then, Evadne, in her fluffy slippers and rubbing her sleepy eyes, shuffled up behind him.
“Thaddeus, I heard you mention Elvis is here?”
“I’m sorry for waking you,” Thaddeus' eyes softened as he gently wrapped his arm around her waist.
Evadne leaned into his embrace; the two bodies intimately snuggling with merely silk fabric between them.
“It’s okay, but Elvis wouldn’t come this late without a good reason. Let’s go see him, Thaddeus.”
In the living room.
When Mr. and Mrs. Abernathy saw Elvis with his face bloodied and his clothes torn, their expressions turned to shock!
Especially Evadne, she’d never seen her brother so disheveled and distraught. Elvis, always as mighty as a demigod!
Of course, the battles Elvis fought, the life-and-death situations, he’d never let his beloved sister witness.
“Elvis! What happened? Are you hurt?!”
Evadne rushed forward, her delicate hands frantically searching over his shoulders, her face pale with worry.
“Evadne, I’m alright,” Elvis looked as if his soul had been drained off, his voice hollow, his gaze distant.
Evadne, frantic with worry, pressed, “You’re alright? Look at your face! And what happened to your clothes?!”
After a moment, Elvis slowly lifted his head, his breathing heavy as if a violent emotion was about to burst forth.
“Evadne, I’ve never asked for anything over the years, but this time, I'm begging you.”
