Ralph ran straight to the first floor. He did not know which room was Alexander’s bedroom, but as he observed the rooms along the corridor, one door to a room was tightly shut. There was obviously something in the room.
He walked toward the bedroom, and as he was about to turn the knob, he stopped. If this was Alexander’s bedroom and the book was in there, he would not be able to enter that easily. Ralph was sure that this room would be filled with traps.
Alexander was a cautious person. He had ensured that his house was well-equipped with the latest security measures. It was impossible that he would leave this room unsecured.
With this in mind, Ralph carefully turned the doorknob, and he was surprised to find that the room was unlocked. This was very suspicious.
After giving it some thought, he decided to take the risk. After all, he was already here. He took out a piece of wood from his pocket and pushed the door open with it. He investigated the slightly ajar door and saw a huge bed in the room. He immediately recognized the layout—it was definitely the master bedroom!
Ralph could not hold in his excitement, but he did not rush into the room abruptly either. He made sure that he had enough space to enter and took out expensive, custom-made glasses that could detect laser beams.
The moment he put the glasses on, a series of overlapping laser beams appeared in the vast bedroom. Ralph smirked in satisfaction as he applauded himself for being well-prepared! If he had just entered blindly, he would have activated those beams.
The aftermath would either be him suffering from injuries or, worse, having to explain to Alexander why he was in his bedroom.
Fortunately, he was prepared for this. He moved slowly and carefully across the laser-covered room, bending, and crawling toward the safe. A few times, he almost touched the beams, but luckily, he could catch himself before he fell.
When he finally got to the safe, he sighed in relief. His back was drenched entirely in sweat. It was not an easy task, as he had to ensure that he did not touch any of the laser beams while not making a sound to avoid alerting the housekeepers.
Ralph gritted his teeth and decided to take the risk as he thought about the company shares he was about to obtain and the riches that would come with them. He crouched and looked at the safe in detail. The safe was an old-style safe that had a dial on it. Ralph needed to make sure that he could get all three digits correct before the safe would open.
He had seen this type of safe before. It was at the office, and he had seen one in Alexander’s room. When he was in the room with Alexander, he took the opportunity to memorize the password he had seen Alexander use while unlocking the safe.
Initially, he had done it so that he could steal some confidential documents for his own personal gains. However, the password he had seen might just be able to crack this safe.
If the two safes were the same kind, would their passwords be the same as well? Even though Ralph had seen people cracking these kinds of safes using a stethoscope on TV, he did not know how it worked. Besides, he did not have one, so it was useless.
While Ralph was still hesitating on how to proceed, he heard some noise from the ground floor. He could not help but feel nervous about it. What if those housekeepers came upstairs, or worse, what if Alexander came home? He could not afford to wait any longer.
