When Margaret had Ralph, her eldest son was already about to get married, so Ralph was only a few years older than Alexander. Margaret had spent most of her time caring for and nurturing her youngest son, and she was unhappy with her eldest daughter-in-law, so naturally, she did not like her grandson either.
She wanted to pass the family business on to her youngest son, but her husband disagreed. Hugo had high hopes for his eldest, and his eldest did not disappoint him either. Unfortunately, Patrick passed away at a young age, and Hugo had no choice but to nurture his grandson, Alexander, into taking over the family business.
To Hugo’s pleasant surprise, Alexander had proved to be an outstanding successor as he was excellent at handling the family businesses and relations. When Hugo knew he would not make it, he made his will and appointed Alexander as his official successor to the Russell family’s wealth.
When the will was announced, there was a big internal feud between members of the Russell family. Margaret took the lead in questioning whether the will was authentic, but for some reason, Alexander had managed to settle the commotion in the family, and everyone accepted the will.
Although a fierce conflict had broken out in the Russell family, the public did not know about it as it was a private matter. The Russell family had taken precautions to conceal the situation and put pressure on the press not to report it. Margaret was still upset that her son was not the successor. Her life would be easier if he had been.
Ralph passed Margaret some tissues after noticing that she had finished her bowl. After she cleaned herself, she turned to him and asked, “How was your meeting with Ms. Riggs?”
“Of course, it went well! It’s me, after all,” Ralph replied confidently, “You can expect to have some grandchildren soon!”
Margaret narrowed her eyes at him and said, “I don’t need any more grandchildren! The important thing about this union is whether you’ll be able to gain the support of the Riggs family!”
The eldest daughter of the Riggs family was not the ideal daughter-in-law Margaret wanted for her precious son. She was too strong. However, Margaret had no choice, as they needed the support and wealth of this prestigious family.
“Mom, don't worry. I’ve seen her in person, and she wasn’t like the rumors at all. She was like a shy, timid little lamb in front of me. I could assure you if I gave her orders, she would follow them obediently. After our marriage, everything that belongs to the Riggs family will be ours too. With their help, I’ll take back whatever that’s mine in the family, and I won’t allow Alex, that boy, to upset you anymore!”
“I will bring him to you and make him apologize personally!” Ralph said with confidence. He was already envisioning what the future would be like.
“Fine, fine, but that’s not important!” Margaret waved her hand dismissively. She added, “I truly hope for you and your sister to be healthy and happy. Your brother was taken away from me at a very young age. As long as both of you are fine, I’ve nothing more to wish for.”
“Mom!” Celine frowned.
“Please don’t say that. There will be better days waiting for you!” Ralph smiled, “The next time I meet Heather, we’ll decide on a date for the wedding. I want to get married as soon as possible.”
“Right, let’s do that! Wasn’t that kid planning for his wedding as well? Let’s have ours before his and make it bigger!” Margaret patted the back of Ralph’s hand and said sourly.
She was so annoyed with Lily that she wanted to take it out on them. She did not understand how Lily could have such amazing luck. The Perfumers’ Society, who had tried to teach her a lesson, had ended up being in trouble with the feds.
If she allowed Lily and Alexander to do as they pleased, Margaret was sure that her family would not be able to have the lives that they wanted. She needed to take back the power of head of the household of the Russell family.
