Evelyn Wu was tired from singing, and her throat was parched.
She put down her microphone and wanted to get a drink from where she was sitting before. But she was surprised to find that Elizabeth Liang wasn't there, nor anywhere else in the room.
"Huh... where's Elizabeth?"
Evelyn took a sip of beer to moisten her throat and sat down. But she began getting nervous after a while since Elizabeth still wasn't back.
Places like these were always messy and unsafe. Evelyn prayed that nothing bad has happened to Elizabeth.
Distraught, she picked up her phone and tried to call Elizabeth. However, after one ring, she saw a phone that was lit up and buzzing on the table before her -Elizabeth didn't even take her phone!
Evelyn waited patiently for a long time, but Elizabeth was nowhere to be seen.
Evelyn couldn't sit still any longer. She grabbed Elizabeth's cellphone and stood up, then began going around the room and questioning her classmates. They were all partying like crazy and none of them saw where Elizabeth went.
Margot Wang was slightly farther away and playing a game with others. Evelyn walked over and pulled on Margot. "Did you see Elizabeth?" "Elizabeth?" Margot was having a blast when she heard Evelyn. She paused, then said in confusion, "No? What's wrong?"
"You really didn't see her?" Evelyn frowned and asked again.
"I didn't! Did she leave?"
"I don't think so." Evelyn shook her head. "Her phone's still here."
"Maybe she went out for a walk?"
Evelyn sighed and said, "Nevermind, you guys keep going. I'll go out and look for her."
Margot sneered as she watched Evelyn leave the room: Isn't it a little too late to realize that your bestie's gone?
Evelyn went out to the corridors of the karaoke and asked several waiters for Elizabeth's whereabouts, but they all claimed that they've never seen her.
Evelyn was fraught with anxiety as she ran around without direction and held a phone in her hand, all the while cursing at herself on the inside: Why was she such a mindless party animal? Elizabeth had literally disappeared, while she was happily and stupidly singing her heart out.
She was so focused on finding Elizabeth that she crashed into a stranger's chest as she ran.
Before Evelyn could react, she heard someone berating her in annoyance, "What the hell? Can't you look at where you're going?"
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry!" Evelyn apologized again and again. The moment she looked up, she felt her heart skipping a beat. The man in front of her was so, so, SO gorgeous! Not only was he handsome, he also had a regal and imposing aura to him. Several people followed behind him, among which was the man who had berated her just now.
"Are you alright?" The handsome man held Evelyn's shoulders and pulled her away from his chest. He asked softly in a voice that was more deep and alluring than any radio DJ she has ever heard.
"Uh..." Evelyn nodded her head in a daze.
The man nodded back in an elegant and reserved manner, then moved to the side.
She heard someone say in a fawning tone, "This way please, Mr. Cheng."
Evelyn slowly came back to her senses after they had left. She patted her slightly flushed cheeks and suddenly remembered why she came out.
"Evelyn you freaking moron!" She yelled and hurriedly ran off again. The only thing she should be doing right now is looking for the missing person!
She walked around the karaoke corridors twice and barged into several private rooms, but couldn't find a single trace of Elizabeth. In the end she searched through all of the bathrooms, but still found nothing.
After returning to the private suite to make sure that Elizabeth wasn't back, Evelyn was on the verge of tears. Elizabeth wasn't in the private suite nor in the bathroom, if she had left then she definitely would've given Evelyn a heads- up. Moreover, her phone was still here, which meant that she must still be somewhere in this hotel! Evelyn frantically rushed out of the suite again, but couldn't do anything except walk around helplessly.
What should she do? She couldn't find Elizabeth and didn't know what to do next. She was drowning in worry, fear, and guilt, causing tears of distress to stream down her face.
"Elizabeth... please come out! How am I supposed to look for you?" In her panic and apprehension, Evelyn began hitting her own head with the phone out of extreme guilt and regret, and she wasn't holding back.
All of a sudden, Evelyn stopped hitting her head with the phone. She looked at Elizabeth's phone in her hand, and her eyes lit up.
She ran to a staircase landing, took a deep breath, then opened Elizabeth's cellphone. She found James Lu's entry in Elizabeth's contacts, the name which she had made fun of in the past. She closed her eyes and pressed the dial button hard...
Meanwhile, James was having an overseas conference with several executives of the company. They were getting to the most crucial parts when his phone suddenly rang on the desk.
James paused and made eyes at Samuel Lee, who was nearby, signalling for him to turn off the phone.
Samuel looked at the caller ID, then looked at his boss who was having a meeting. He only hesitated for a second before declining the call.
Evelyn was nervously waiting when she heard the phone ring come to an abrupt end. She froze for a couple of seconds, bit her lip, then dialed again.
She really couldn't think of anyone else to call right now.
"Bzzzzz—"
The phone that was just placed back on the desk in the conference room began buzzing and moving again.
James frowned, but as soon as he glanced at the screen Samuel had already turned it off.
Yet in less than five seconds, the phone buzzed again.
Samuel's face drooped as he grumbled inside: God damn it Ms. Liang, don't you know that my boss is negotiating a billion-dollar deal right now? What the heck are you calling him non-stop for? Isn't it a bit too early for him to be in bed right now?
As Samuel thought this, he reached out a trembling hand to decline the call with everyone watching.
