After getting on the train, Cornelia whipped out her phone and pinged Jeremy a text, "Hey Jeremy, I'm on the train to Southern Peak. Got any messages for grandma?"
In this age of instant communication, you can say whatever you want via video chat.
Cornelia was just looking for an excuse to chat with Jeremy and build a rapport. Jeremy didn't seem like the chatty type. He hardly ever initiated contact, and it was mostly her reaching out.
Cornelia didn't have a problem with Jeremy being a bit of an introvert. She was just worried that he might find her annoying if she kept reaching out.
After sending the text, Cornelia began to wait patiently.
One minute passed...
Five minutes passed...
Ten minutes went by, and Jeremy still hadn't replied. But Cornelia kept her cool.
She hadn't expected to reach Southern Peak by train and still not have a reply from Jeremy.
Cornelia was a bit disappointed. But she started making excuses for him. He was probably busy at work and couldn't respond.
If she were busy and he texted her, she wouldn't be able to respond either. With that thought, Cornelia's disappointment vanished.
She shot Jeremy another text, "Hey Jeremy, if you're busy, I'll stop bothering you. Just remember to text me back when you're free. Got some important stuff to discuss."
After sending the text, Cornelia didn't wait for Jeremy to reply and put away her phone, hailing a cab to Southern Summer Garden.
Little did Cornelia know that at that moment, Marcus was in the ICU of The Hartley Group's private hospital, unconscious since morning with no signs of waking up.
Dr. Dawson was pacing anxiously outside the ICU. Even the usually cool Jayden was getting anxious, smoking one cigarette after another, "Mom, stop pacing. What the hell happened to President Hartley?"
Dr. Dawson regained her composure at his shout.
She sat down beside Jayden, took a cigarette from him and lit it, inhaling deeply, "Do you remember how Ayden got that scar on his face?"
Ayden's horrendous scar nearly ruined his face. Jayden could never forget about it, but what did it have to do with anything now, "What does Ayden's scar have to do with anything?"
Dr. Dawson finished her cigarette, then said slowly, "I remember Marc was less than eighteen that year. He took over The Hartley Group for less than two months, and everything was in chaos inside and out.”
