“Because he personally sent his own father to jail, many people were scared and awed of him. At the same time, due to his young age, they didn't believe in his capabilities. There were a lot of people who wanted a piece of the Hartley Group, and he was under siege.
“The project in America was the key to the Hartley Group's resurgence, as well as the key for him to showcase his abilities to the world. However, that project was so profitable that not only he wanted it, but many others did as well.
“After round and round of competition, his odds of winning were growing. When it looked like he was about to secure the project, competitors who couldn't beat him in a fair fight started to resort to dirty tricks.”
"Was President Hartley's fainting spell related to that incident?" Jayden knew that, but he was sent off by Marcus on other tasks and wasn't with them when they went to America, so he didn't know how dangerous it was.
Dr. Dawson continued, "On the night before the project was signed, Marc's car was hijacked. He was taken to a warehouse by the sea by the kidnappers. They gave him two choices – he dies, or he voluntarily gives up the project.
“In the business world, it's often said that the marketplace is a battlefield, and experienced businessmen know that sometimes it's even more terrifying than a real battlefield. There are real guns and cannons on the battlefield, but the marketplace is often filled with invisible bullets.”
How difficult Marcus's path to growth was, Dr. Dawson and her two sons should know more clearly than others.
Dr. Dawson went on, "You know what kind of person Marc is. If he has his sights on something, he won't give it up easily. Those guys put a gun to his head, trying to intimidate him into signing the contract. He didn't budge, but told them firmly that he's set on the project. He played for time by engaging them in talks until Ayden arrived with help. Though they managed to rescue Marc in the end, both Ayden and Marc got seriously injured..."
Before Dr. Dawson could finish, Jayden interrupted her, "Wasn't it just Ayden who got hurt? Did President Hartley get injured too? Why didn't I know about this?"
Even after all these years, this was the first time Dr. Dawson mentioned this incident to someone. Each time she thought about the situation back then, she would still get so tense she couldn't breathe properly, "The more people know about it, the bigger the risk of him being exposed. So only Ayden and I knew about his injury."
"Not even me?" Jayden felt a little hurt. He always thought that there was nothing about Marcus that he didn't know.
