Granny Luisa, tears streaming down her face, was a sight that broke Cornelia's heart. "What's wrong? Why do you keep saying sorry?"
Granny Luisa confessed, "Actually, we've been keeping something from you. Your granny's death wasn't due to her illness suddenly getting worse, but to poisoning."
The news hit Cornelia like a punch in the gut. She could barely believe what she was hearing as shock and pain swept over her. As her mind went into a whirl, Granny Luisa continued, "John, my driver, had spiked our drinking water with a drug. This drug is harmless to most people but, if taken with the medication for kidney disease, it can be fatal..."
Granny Luisa paused, then said, "Nelly, I didn't mean to hide the truth from you. I was just scared... scared that you might leave Marc if you found out."
The fact that Granny Rebecca's death was no accident was a blow that Cornelia hadn't seen coming. Guilt and a whirlwind of emotions threatened to overwhelm Cornelia, but she fought to stay calm. She knew she couldn't blame Granny Luisa or Marcus for this; she had to find who was really responsible.
"It's not your fault, and it's not Marc's either. All you need to do is hand John over to the police and let the law deal with him."
Granny Luisa responded, "You think I'd cover for John? When we found out it was him, Marc handed him and all the evidence over to the police."
"Thanks," Cornelia sighed in relief. She had thought Granny Luisa might ask for leniency for John. "You should rest now. I'm going to step out for a bit."
Granny Luisa tried to say something but then stopped. Some things were better left for her and Marcus to discuss.
