Cornelia cut him off mid-sentence, "I know you've been good to my grandma, and you've done everything you could to help me take care of her and made sure we had no worries in Riverton. I know you've been good to me, but what I want to know is why you couldn't just tell me straight?"
Facing her accusations, Marcus' gaze under his silver spectacles was filled with guilt and panic, "Cornelia, have you ever felt what it's like to try so hard yet fail to get close to someone?"
Cornelia responded, "Yes! When my father left me in a car accident, and now when my grandma left me, they were right next to me, but I couldn't reach them no matter how hard I tried."
"I feel the same way right now. Because I'm scared that you are right beside me, but I can't get close to you..." Marcus pushed up his silver glasses and suddenly laughed, his laughter deep. "I don't even know myself when you became such an important part of my life. I don't even dare to think about how I would continue to live if you left me. Cornelia, I like you, I'm afraid of losing you, so when it comes to dealing with things related to you, I become indecisive, completely unlike my usual self."
Cornelia was no foo. She could feel that Marcus' way of handling Granny Rebecca's affairs was completely different from his past.
She hadn't expected that when she confronted him angrily, she would receive his sincere and direct confession. His voice was low, each word rhythmically spoken from his mouth, like beautiful notes striking her ears, sinking into her heart.
"Cornelia..." Marcus opened his arms and held her tightly.
Cornelia didn't struggle, just let him hold her, "My grandma and John had no conflicts, why did he want to kill my grandma?"
Marcus' tall body stiffened slightly, and Cornelia noticed something was wrong, "Does this have anything to do with me? You must tell me the truth, no hiding anything."
Marcus said, "John has been driving for my grandma for over twenty years. He was with my grandma before I was even born, and we always treated him like family. He was always loyal to our family, even to the point of blindness."
"So when he saw your scandal, he had some twisted thoughts in his mind, thinking you were not worthy of me, and wanted to kill you..."
