This was Clair's recent contact with Marcus, and her best shot at becoming Marcus's mother-in-law. She certainly wouldn't let this opportunity slip through her fingers, and she said, "Nelly, if you forgive me, I'll give you a well-decorated house in Riverton. You won't have to squeeze in that tiny rental with your two friends anymore."
"What gives you the right to call me Nelly? Don't ever say my name again. It makes me sick just to hear you say it. And for the record, I'm happy living with my friends, even if we're in a basement. My grandma doesn't need you to pay respects either, I'm afraid it will tarnish her gravestone." Cornelia stormed to the door, yanking it open, "Get out!"
Unexpectedly, Marcus was standing at the door.
Cornelia froze, her voice dwindled to a whisper, so low that Marcus could barely hear her if he didn't pay close attention, a far cry from her earlier bravado, "When did you get back?"
"Just now." Marcus confirmed that Cornelia was okay, then turned his icy, cold gaze towards Clair.
Clair feigned surprise, "Marc, what are you doing here?"
"Ayden, see the guest out!" Marcus didn't want to exchange an extra word with Clair.
Ayden immediately stepped forward, "Please leave!"
"Cornelia, are you and Marc..." Clair tried to say something, but Ayden pulled her out before she could finish.
Marcus closed the door and turned around to see Cornelia collapsed on the floor. Luckily, his quick reflexes allowed him to catch her, "Cornelia."
