Despite their grumbling, the scouts and soldiers had no choice but to confront what lay ahead. As the ominous figure drew nearer, the captain's legs began to tremble uncontrollably, and goosebumps prickled across his skin.
Their focus shifted from the identity of the approaching figure to whether they could survive the ordeal and escape the forest alive.
"Men, fire at will!"
Though filled with suppressed fear, the captain's command rang out. Despite that, his words injected a surge of courage into his comrades.
In an instant, dozens of bullets streaked toward Matthew. But something inexplicable occurred—the bullets abruptly stopped mid-air. It was thwarted by an unseen force as if an invisible barrier had intercepted them.
The ambush team stood frozen in disbelief, their wide eyes questioning the impossible. Could this really be a human?
They could have accepted it if their enemy had been bulletproof or exceptionally agile. Plus, they had encountered martial arts masters before, and ordinary firearms rarely posed a threat. But this was unlike anything they had experienced.
Seeing bullets suspended mid-air alongside a demonic figure emerging from what seemed like hell was overwhelming for anyone.
"I… I can't do this anymore. I want to go home, I don't want to die here," one of them stuttered. He dropped his rifle and bolted away in sheer terror.
His panicked retreat sparked a chain reaction among the others, who followed suit as they abandoned their posts. What had been a battlefield moments ago now felt like a grim march toward certain death.
Amid the chaos, only the captain retained a semblance of composure. His face hardened as he watched his men desert their positions. Without a word, he raised his handgun and aimed at the fleeing soldier. "Listen up!" His voice rang out like a clarion call. "Anyone who runs will be executed on the spot."
After firing at the fifth deserter, everyone froze. Their faces twisted with fear as they turned to look at the captain.
The captain stood tall and assumed they were intimidated by his actions. As he opened his mouth to speak, he felt a sudden chill. His body stiffened as if electrocuted, and cold sweat began to trickle down his back.
He turned his head and was confronted by a terrifying mask. Through its blood-red eyes, he glimpsed an ominous sea of endless blood that threatened to overwhelm him.
"Who are you? Don't come any closer, or I'll shoot," the captain asked. Despite witnessing Matthew's terrifying abilities, the captain clung to his handgun.
However, Matthew remained silent. His mind was consumed by thoughts of murder. With a subtle tilt of his head, his eyes lost their warmth and were replaced by a cold, murderous glint.
The captain seized the opportunity and swiftly drew a knife. He plunged it into Matthew's abdomen and was relieved when he felt the blade sink into Matthew's flesh. Seeing the knife buried in Matthew's body, he laughed.
"Haha! You're not so tough after all to pull a stunt like that. You bleed... just like anyone else..."
But when he glanced down at Matthew's wound, disbelief washed over him. On closer inspection, a horrifying truth emerged. Despite the knife buried in Matthew's body, there wasn't a drop of blood in sight.
