"Regent, I've heard a lot about you. Now that I'm meeting you in person, you really are as impressive as they say!" The quirky minister, wine glass in hand, approached Matthew and Gadel, giving a polite bow from afar.
Matthew grinned. "Oh, those stories are all blown out of proportion. Keep flattering me like this, and I might start believing them."
Once the banquet wrapped up, everyone left feeling pretty good. Everyone thought, It turns out the Regent isn't as harsh and ruthless as the rumors claimed—he seems easygoing and approachable.
The following morning, Matthew was up at the crack of dawn.
"You know why I'm really here, right?" Matthew asked Gadel as soon as he saw him. He was eager to leave. His wife was all he could think about, and sticking around the palace was out of the question.
Gadel suggested, "Why not stick around for a few more days? I'll have my men start looking for Sasha."
"If you find her without me being there in time, she'll freak out," Matthew responded, clearly worried.
Gadel sighed, giving him a look that said he understood. "I won't hold you up, then. Take the Regent's token here, and here's mine too." He handed them over, adding, "If one doesn't work, the other should do the trick. Just pretend I'm there with you."
Matthew nodded. "Sure."
Gadel hesitated, looking a little embarrassed. "Honestly, if my magic doesn't help, I doubt a couple of tokens will."
Matthew glanced at the badges, his expression turning serious. Still, he nodded in appreciation. "Thanks. I owe you one."
