Turning to Matthew, Mack's expression softened as he said, "Buddy, thank you for helping out my foolish friend here." He extended a sincere smile and offered his hand to Matthew, genuinely grateful for his assistance.
Matthew shook Mack's hand; with such a respectful approach, he wouldn't be rude in return.
As their hands clasped, Mack's expression shifted slightly, a look of surprise crossing his face. He wasn't just a brute—Mack had a knack for assessing someone's strength through a handshake alone. By gauging the strength in someone's grip and the texture of their skin, Mack could usually determine whether they were stronger or weaker than himself. But with Matthew, he couldn't get a read at all.
Quickly, Mack released Matthew's hand, not wanting to linger and give away his astonishment.
"Listen, you just knocked down the Island Watch squad captain's nephew. He's not going to let that go easily. Your skills are impressive, but if he decides to accuse you, you'd be facing a whole lot more than one squad. Why don't you lay low at our dock for a while?" Mack offered, his tone serious.
Even though their dock was the weakest of the three, Mack felt confident that if Matthew stayed there, not even the Island Watch would dare storm in. It was an unspoken rule on the islands: if one of your own stirred up trouble outside, whoever won the fight called the shots. But if the Watch came after someone inside their base, the three docks, despite their rivalries, would temporarily join forces.
Matthew considered Mack's offer. He did need a temporary base of operations and a place to gather intel on the shipment he was tracking. He nodded and said quietly, "Thank you. I go by Matteo Larden."
Hearing Matthew's agreement, Mack's face broke into a wide grin. He slapped Matthew's shoulder and boomed, "You're one of us now, Matteo. From here on out, we're family. I'm Mack—call me Mack or Mr. Mack, whatever suits you. I'm easygoing."
A slight smile tugged at Matthew's lips. He sensed no ill will from Mack, which was one reason he'd decided to stay.
Since landing on this island, this was only the third time he'd encountered someone without hidden motives toward him. The first was the lawyer Tertius, the second was the recruitment officer, and now, there was Mack.
"Mr. Mack, I have some business to handle, so I'll likely join you tonight."
Mack blinked at Matthew's response but quickly nodded, his tone hearty. "Sure thing, Matteo. Just be careful out there. This guy will be out of commission for a while, so the Watch probably won't come after you just yet. But if you're ever in danger, head straight for the dock. Our guild will back you up."
"Thank you, Mr. Mack." Matthew nodded and then walked off, following Boone and his niece.
Mack watched Matthew's departing figure with a look of admiration. Young, composed, and well-spoken—this one had the potential to accomplish great things.
