Matthew walked alongside Boone on the gravel path, noting the worry etched on his and Winnie's faces.
"When you get home, stop using Triproot and increase the dosage of the original herbs by one and a half times. Within three days, it should start to relieve the coughing and help with breathing," Matthew said quietly.
Boone's body tensed at Matthew's words, looking at him with surprise. "Mr. Larden… you know medicine?"
"I know a little," Matthew nodded, adding, "Triproot conflicts with Breezewort, which is why the coughing won't stop and even leads to bloody sputum. Cut it out, and make sure to drink plenty of warm water."
Boone's eyes filled with tears as he listened to Matthew. "Mr. Larden, please accept my gratitude!" Boone dropped to his knees, attempting to bow.
Matthew gave Winnie a quick look, and she immediately grabbed her uncle's arm. "Uncle, Mr. Larden has other matters to attend to. Let's not keep him. Besides, Aunt's still waiting for us. We should get back and prepare the medicine."
Understanding the hint, Boone bowed deeply to Matthew once more before hurrying off with his niece.
As Boone walked away, a gust of wind lifted his shirt, briefly revealing a tattoo of a snake-headed, human-bodied figure. Matthew narrowed his eyes, mentally noting the design before heading back the way he'd come.
He still needed Tertius' help and figured he could bring him to the dock. With Mack and the others not well-versed in administration, Tertius, a law school graduate, could likely handle the duties well.
As he made his way back, he heard a familiar voice shouting angrily, "Aren't you all afraid of the Island Watch coming down on you?"
The angry tone made Matthew frown slightly. It was Tertius.
Turning toward a nearby alley, Matthew strode over, maintaining a calm demeanor. Inside, Tertius stood with arms spread, shielding a young woman behind him. His eyes, normally gentle, were filled with alertness as he faced several men.
"Tertius, you think a weakling like you can protect that little girl behind you? Hand her over. We'll make sure she's well 'protected,'" one of the men sneered, grinning wickedly.
Their hungry gazes lingered on the young woman behind Tertius. They couldn't believe their luck, stumbling upon such a beauty. Ideas of their next steps already flashed through their minds—they'd have their fun, then sell her to the brothels for a hefty profit.
"Absolutely not. She's my junior. If you want to touch her, you'll have to go through me!" Tertius' normally kind eyes were filled with unwavering resolve as he brandished a short, slightly dirty knife, its blade still bearing a few crumbs of food.
The men stared at the knife in disbelief, then burst into mocking laughter. "Oh, come on, Tertius, you planning to kill us with that? Looks like it's only good for peeling apples. Look, there's even food on it! That's priceless."
"You think that's funny?"
