Chapter 783
Just as Skylar was about to sit down and eat breakfast, Joe came downstairs. He had gotten changed.
“I’ve made some sandwiches,” Skylar said.
Joe nodded and replied, “Mhmm. I’m hungry.”
They were silent as they ate. When they finished, they tidied up separately.
The atmosphere between them seemed peaceful. However, there was something off about it. Skylar
didn’t like to skirt around her issues. She asked Joe, “Will you be coming home for dinner?”
Joe looked at her. He paused briefly before answering, “Yeah, I’ll be coming home.”
“Alright. See you at night.”
They would talk it out at dinner.
Vera. immediately rushed over to Denton’s house after his call. He’d come back in the morning.
Vera knew he’d been to Avalon Residence, and she was also aware that Joe had gone. That was why she went to meet Skylar.
She had not gotten much sleep the previous night; her face throbbed from Skylar’s slap. Even after putting on medication, it still stung painfully. Vera was aware that it was only in her head.
It was the first time Vera had ever gotten slapped.
“Grandpa.”
Vera set aside her emotions and regained her composure upon seeing Denton.
However, he didn’t greet her with a smile like he used to. Instead, his expression was rather cold.
“Vera, what’s going on between you and Joe? He spared me no deference last night. I’m his elder, not to mention a powerful man Jipsburg. Yet, he turned me down just like that.”
Denton pounded on the table. The helpers jumped. Vera was stunned as well. She seldom saw him like this.
Vera bit her lip briefly before steeling herself to ask, “Grandpa, what happened last night?”
Hadn’t the Martins called Denton over to confirm the status of her relationship with Joe?
Both families harbored similar thoughts, and the discussion should’ve gone smoothly. However, Denton mentioned Joe’s lack of deference. What happened last night?
Denton said grimly, “Joe said that Mrs. Martin Senior had decided on his marriage for him. There was no need for Garth or anyone else to interfere. By saying anyone else, he was referring to me, wasn’t he?”
“I don’t think that’s what he meant. Joe has carried the Martin family on his shoulders. He has the capability and the right to ensure his elders don’t stick their noses into his business,” Vera attempted to explain.
A few years ago, she left Jipsburg because she believed Joe couldn’t stand up against the Martins. After all, it was him against the world. Other members of the Martin family would rob him of his power.
Vera underestimated Joe. Not only had he protected what belonged to him, but he had also spread his wings of influence in Jipsburg.
