C Chapter 9**1*7
However, it was work hours, and there was no chance Skylar would be drinking.
Half an hour passed before Caleb noticed Skylar still hadn’t shown up. He shot her a quick message on WhatsApp. “Stuck in traffic?”
More than ten minutes passed without a reply. Caleb stared at the growing stack of work in front of him, his eyelids twitching. An uneasy feeling began to gnaw at him.
After waiting a while longer with still no response, he couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off.
He dialed her number.
Her phone was off.
That wasn’t like her. Caleb quickly called Joe,
Joe answered the phone quickly, but it was obvious he was in the middle of work. His tone was cold.”
What is it?”
Caleb got straight to the point. “Is Skylar home today? She hasn’t come to work, and I can’t reach her. Something doesn’t feel right.”
“What did you say?” Joe’s voice dropped, cold and cutting.
Caleb repeated himself. “Skylar hasn’t shown up-”
“She was supposed to be there 40 minutes ago.” Joe’s voice was icy. Without another word, he hung up.
The abrupt end of the call stunned Caleb for a moment. If Skylar was supposed to have arrived nearly an hour ago, something was definitely wrong. His eyes widened in realization. “D**n it!”
Worry crept in. Caleb quickly asked in the company group chat if anyone had seen Skylar that morning.
No one had. Just then, someone mentioned spotting a man carrying a woman to the street across Gardner Group earlier. The woman resembled Skylar.
Caleb’s mind raced. Could she have fallen ill, and someone came to help her? He immediately pulled up the building’s surveillance footage.
Though she wasn’t near the main entrance, Skylar’s outfit and appearance were unmistakable. Then, a man appeared, speaking to her at length. Moments later, Skylar collapsed, and the man carried her to a nearby car.
Caleb immediately forwarded the footage to Joe, then rushed to file a police report.
Skylar regained consciousness the moment she was placed down in an apartment. But her body felt weak -likely from whatever Christopher had sprayed on her so she decided to keep pretending to be asleep.
used a spray to knock her out and brought her here… I know I shouldn’t have done it, but I couldn’t stand it anymore. She only thinks about Joe now and doesn’t listen to anything I say. You’ve got to help me figure this out.
“Besides, me taking Skylar away benefits you too, doesn’t it? I’ll stop talking now. I’m going to f**k her. The longer I wait, the messier things get. By the time Joe comes looking, it’ll already be too late. Skylar and I would have already done the deed, I’ll make sure he sees how I’ve **ed her.
