Valerie was there just as the elevator door closed. As Pedro was nowhere to be seen, she asked anxiously, "Where's your father? Why didn't you stop him? Something bad could happen."
"He said he's going to look for a doctor. He told me not to follow him."
Valerie anxiously pushed the elevator buttons, and she almost broke into tears. "He could have called up the doctor. Why would he have to go personally? He is definitely not just meeting a doctor. Arianna, we have to stop him. He's up to no good. It has taken him quite a while to finally get over his past. Now, he is determined to live a peaceful life, and I don't want anything bad to happen to him. Otherwise, my hopes will be dashed.”
I sensed something was amiss. I looked at Valerie and said, "Mom, tell me honestly, what's happening? I'll chase after him. I’ll get Hendrix to help out if I can't stop him. Would you please calm down and tell me everything?"
Valerie burst into tears while nodding. I called Hendrix and got him to contact Pedro. Then, I led Valerie to the corridor to take a seat.
Once she composed herself, she asked, "Arianna, have you heard of organ trading?"
I broke out in a cold sweat. Flabbergasted, I shook my head and said, "Mom, tell me frankly, what's going on?"
As she raised her hand to wipe tears off her cheeks, she said, "There is nothing in the world that can't be bought. With money and power, nothing is ever out of reach. Anything you desire could be at your disposal. Organ trading has crossed your dad's mind ever since Anne fell sick. Having been in the underground society for so many years, he reckons this is the way to save her. But I objected on grounds that we are leading a peaceful life now. Hendrix and you are getting on much better now. On top of that, you’re pregnant. If your father gets involved in an illicit organ trade, the Moores and the Roberts families would indirectly be implicated. It's not that I’m being selfish... But the fact is that too many people would be impacted!"
It took me quite a while before I calmed down. Then, I asked, "Mom, so did Dad get in touch with anyone?"
Valerie was stunned. Surprised, she said, "No, Arianna! We must never resort to that. Those organs have been obtained through heinous means!"
I grabbed hold of her arm and comforted her, "Mom, that's not what I meant. I just want to know where Dad is heading! I'll find him. Anyway, I think all of us should get together before we decide on the next course of action!"
She was trembling with fear as she nodded.
Having composed herself, she said, "Pedro has long dissociated himself from the underground society. A few days ago, I overheard his conversation with his former triad members. That' s when I knew that he had been planning to purchase an organ through the illicit trade. It turned out that organ trading is only available at Asherton. If the medical procedure involves surgery, Anne would need to be transferred there. Pedro is likely heading to the airport now. Earlier, when he asked the doctor about how long Anne could survive, he must be planning how to head to Asherton for the trade!"
I rang Hendrix and told him to get Pedro back from the airport. Then I looked at Valerie and asked, "Who else knows about this?"
She shook her head. "Only Pedro and I... But, I strongly object to that. It's too risky. If somebody finds out, our family would be doomed."
I pursed my lips and remained silent. Valerie looked at me and asked hypothetically, "Arianna... Frankly, if Pedro manages to find the right bone marrow and kidney for Anne, would you give your consent to it?"
