Hendrix was silent for a moment before he spoke in a very serious tone, "Arianna, I know you're worried and care very much about Anne, but you must promise me that no matter what happens, we can't hurt anyone, okay?"
I nodded and replied, "Okay, I won't. You have to believe me!"
His affectionate voice came from the other end of the line, "Okay, I believe you!"
I understood the meaning of Hendrix's words. He was afraid I was willing to do anything just to save Anne, that I inadvertently hurt someone else in the process. My mind was very torn. On one hand, I was worried about Anne and wanted to save her no matter what. On the other hand, I was doubting my choice of bringing Abby into this. Both of them were just young children who had so much hope and promise. Once Abby underwent the operation, no matter how well we took care of her, it would eventually still cause damage to her body.
I chatted with Hendrix for a while before hanging up the phone. When I saw Abby gazing at me with a pair of watery eyes, I thought she was hungry and said to her, "We're getting home soon. Abby, are you hungry?"
She shook her head and looked at me, still clutching the bread and bottle of water we had given her. Then, she said, "Madam Reid, why haven't we seen Susan's car after driving for a long time? I saw many vehicles on the road, but none of them was the one that took Susan away. Where did she go? Can I still see her?"
I was stunned by this five-year-old child. I thought that she had been staring out the window, looking at the scenery outside. I didn't expect that she had been looking for Susan's van all along the way.
In that instant, there was indescribable distress in my heart. I suppressed my emotions and said, "Abby, Susan is with someone else now. I don't know where she is either."
After hearing what I said, she lowered her head and fell silent. She just looked at the bread in her hand, appearing a little depressed. I wanted to comfort her, but I didn't know what to say.
I could only keep silent. After a while, Sheridan said to me, while driving, "Miss Reid, you can take a nap. We're still a few hours' drive away. I'll wake you when we arrive!"
