"Leave the adults affair to the adults. You're still young, all you need to do is to study well and grow up healthy. Otherwise, Aurelia would be upset. You're allowed to live your life, you don't need to live for us, understand?"
I patted Neal's shoulder with much gratitude. Even though I was touched, these values and lessons were still needed for a child to understand.
Neal sealed his lips tightly, not a single word was uttered, so I wasn't sure if he listened.
It didn't matter. There was still a lot of time, I could slowly teach him. After all, he was a boy, so it was probably better for Hendrix to speak to him. "In short, just do whatever you want to next time, there's no need to please others. The most important thing is that you are happy, do you hear me?"
"But I want to do this." Neal stubbornly looked at me. "I want Anne to be happy, can't I, Mrs. Roberts?"
In the face of such an innocent question, I was ashamed and speechless. Perhaps I'd been too sensitive. This was just a child that knew honesty and gratitude. There was no need for me to filter his every single action through the lens of an adult.
A child's World was pure. There were no ulterior motives, no entertaining anyone submissively. All they knew was repaying kindness with kindness.
Neal was just unwilling to see the woman who had allowed him a home upset, was there anything wrong with it?
"No." I shook my head with a smile and placed the documents back on the table. I ruffled his shaggy head. "If you want to continue reading it, go ahead. However, promise Aunty this, once you're tired, immediately head to bed. And, you can't stay up past 3 in the morning. Can you do it?"
Neal's face revealed a hint of joy and he heavily nodded his head. "Yes."
After saying so, he sat back down and continued poring over the documents. His serious features lent him the countenance of an adult.
