"Nothing much, just stage a play," I said. The air felt thick with their tension, but I was rather indifferent. "I only need you to restore what happened that night and make a confession for me to record."
The two men didn't oppose my proposal at first, but their faces darkened after I finished my sentence. They looked at me, and one of them said, "Miss Reid, we don't have a problem with the acting, but we can't possibly make a confession after taking the money from the client. If we expose the client, we're going back on our words."
I nodded, and I played with my cell phone. I began to feel bored with their timidity and said, "In that case, you don't have to act with me anymore. Both of you are married and with children, right? Maybe I should let your wife suffer what I had gone through. As for the children... My child is dead, so your children—"
At this point, I looked up at Irvin and pulled a smile, "I don't want to kill people, especially children. Irvin, is there any other way to torture people that is worse than death?"
Irvin pondered for a moment and answered, "Yes, there is. For starters, we can cut off their limbs, and-"
"Both of you are heartless!" The two men broke down and lunged toward Irvin and me.
But Irvin's bodyguards quickly held them down.
I let out a breath I hadn't realized that I was holding, and smiled softly. Then, I said rather coldly, "What have we done to deserve that title? Did you forget that two months ago, you left me here in this abandoned warehouse for mere hundreds of thousands of dollars? I was in labor! But the two of you brutally tied up my legs, and my child couldn't come out because of that. Do you know how he died? He suffocated to death! I haven't even done anything to you yet. Look what you've done! How dare you call me heartless?"
I spoke clearly and loudly. Looking at the two of them coldly, I said, "I don't mind if you won't cooperate with me. If you can murder people and then escape the law, we can do that too."
"No! Miss Reid, we will do as you said! My wife and children... They are innocent! We were blinded by money and committed such an evil deed. If you want revenge, come at us! We will do whatever you want!"
The other man also begged, "Yes, we will do whatever you want as long as you spare our families' lives!"
Their plea was heart-rending, and it began to irk me. I drew a deep breath, looking at Irvin, and I said, "Since they have both agreed, let's get started."
Irvin nodded and signaled for the pregnant actress to be brought in. She was wearing the clothes I wore on that day when everything went south. Irvin also hired a skillful makeup artist who transformed the actress to look very similar to me. With only a few adjustments, her facial features and figure were almost identical to mine.
Irvin even ordered his men to bring in a similar mirror that was originally in the warehouse.
The warehouse looked exactly the same as it was two months ago. As for the lightning and thunderstorm, since we decided to put on an act, everything was already on stand by.
I didn't want to refresh my memories of that night. So, I only gave the pregnant actress a brief account of what happened that night before asking Irvin to send me back.
As for the person — or the party — who hired the men, I had already figured it out even before listening to their confession. I wanted to record it only because it would be the conclusive evidence to leave them no room for argument when I expose them someday.
I had to say that people changed as they gained experiences. With enough hatred, or love, or pain, no one would be weak and incompetent forever.
After returning to the apartment, I simply cleaned up myself and went to bed. I slept soundly, having a dreamless night.
