When the entire Yelchin family had treated her like a treasure, she had cheated with Felix and gotten her dear son killed. The memory of Faraday’s death sent a shard of ice through Darleen’s heart.
“I could just kill her,” she hissed, each word laced with venom.
Right now, Darleen genuinely wanted Brinley dead.
“I want to kill her, too,” Xenia echoed, her voice tight with fury.
It wasn’t just Darleen. Xenia shared the sentiment completely.
“This is all her fault. We treated Starla so horribly because of her, and now Starla has no shred of kindness or mercy for any of us.”
Darleen’s shoulders sagged with regret. “You’re right. It’s all because of Brinley. I only treated Starla that way because of her.”
She regretted it deeply now. If only she had been kinder to Starla from the beginning, would things be different? Would Starla have shown the Yelchin family some leniency instead of pushing them to this breaking point?
“I was such a fool,” she lamented. “I can’t believe I actually wanted Fairfax to be with Brinley and treated Starla so poorly.”
Even though Starla didn’t seem like a good person now, Darleen couldn’t help but think that if they hadn’t provoked her, hadn’t trampled all over her, the Yelchin family wouldn't be in this state.
“What did you do to her?”
A sudden, icy voice cut through the wind behind them.
Darleen and Xenia froze, their backs rigid. They exchanged a panicked glance before slowly turning to face Fairfax, who was now striding toward them. Each step he took felt heavy, crushing them with an unbearable pressure. Instinctively, they both took a step back.
“Fairfax.”
