A Widow's Poison A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 566

So why was Fairfax asking the same question now? It had to be because of Starla. She must have said something to him. But how could she know about those things? They had happened long before she and Fairfax even met.

Was she not only tormenting them but also secretly digging into her past? That couldn't be right, either. She had cleaned up all the evidence back then. There was no way for anyone to find out.

“You have,” Fairfax’s voice was flat, a statement, not a question. “How many?”

Darleen felt the air leave her lungs. How many?

“What do you take me for?” she shot back, her voice shaking despite her attempt at indignation. “Do you really think your own mother is some kind of monster?”

She denied it fast, but the guilt in her gut wouldn’t settle.

Fairfax said nothing. He simply stared at her, his eyes growing deeper, more inscrutable. That unnerving silence made her panic even more. Even as his mother, she felt a profound sense of dread under his gaze.

“She must have said something to you, didn’t she? You’ve seen how things are between us. It’s only natural she’d try to turn you against me!” Darleen insisted desperately. “She wants to destroy us, to tear our family apart.”

That damned Starla. She couldn’t know. She was just playing a vicious game, trying to drive a wedge between her and her son. The woman was truly diabolical!

Fairfax remained silent, his gaze unwavering, the darkness in his eyes deepening.

“Fairfax, don’t believe her,” Darleen pleaded.

“Then what did you do to her?” he asked, his voice low. He paused, then cut himself off. “Never mind. I already know everything I need to.”
