The morning breeze was gentle.
The sun had just begun to rise when Janina woke up.
Grace and Ethan were heading back to their hometown today.
An elder in the village had passed away, and they had to attend the funeral.
Grace was worried about leaving Janina home alone and asked either West or Natalie to stay with her.
Janina thought her mother was being overly cautious. West and Natalie both had to work; there was no need to trouble them.
Fortunately, Maggie was on leave and would be coming over to keep her company, so Grace finally felt at ease and left with Ethan.
After breakfast, Maggie called to say she'd be at Crystal Springs in half an hour. Janina settled onto the lounge chair in the living room to wait.
Her due date was only twenty-three days away. She just hoped she could make it until then.
Half an hour later, Maggie arrived. But she had been there for less than ten minutes when she got a call from her company about a surprise visit from an overseas client.
It was related to a major project, so Maggie had no choice but to go back to the office.
After Maggie left, Janina went to her room to rest for a while. By the time she woke up, it was almost one in the afternoon.
She hadn't been sleeping well at night, getting up to use the bathroom multiple times. So she usually took naps during the day.
Now she was hungry but didn't feel like cooking. The heat had zapped her appetite anyway. What she really wanted was a beef burger, and there was an amazing burger joint right across the street.
Janina changed her shoes, grabbed a small purse with her phone and some tissues, and headed out.
She was at the burger joint in less than ten minutes.
The shop had a few scattered customers. Janina ordered a beef burger and a cola.
She planned to go back home and work on her design sketches after lunch. She needed to finish her current projects before the baby arrived; earning money was a pressing matter.
After finishing her meal, she got up to leave.
Grace was worried, so she called Janina to ask if she had eaten. Janina assured her she had and told her not to worry.
Though it had been sunny that morning, the sky was now overcast. Dark, heavy clouds were gathering, signaling an approaching storm.
There would be heavy rain tonight.
After hanging up, Janina prepared to cross the street, not wanting to linger outside.
