Abandoned by All I Took It All Back novel Chapter 243

Janina could walk in small steps, but only by hunching over and moving slowly, unable to make any large movements, and that was with the abdominal binder on.

While handling her discharge paperwork, she went to see her two babies, who were still in their incubators. Because they were premature, both the boy and the girl were tiny and thin, their skin wrinkled.

Natalie had tried to cheer her up earlier, saying their skin was smooth and not wrinkled at all.

Seeing them lying there, so small in their incubators without a mother's embrace, a lump formed in her throat and tears instantly welled in her eyes.

"You promised you wouldn't cry. You're still recovering, you can't be crying. It's okay, Nina, don't cry," Grace said, her own heart aching as she watched her daughter weep. She felt just as heartbroken for the two little ones, but their condition simply wasn't stable enough for them to be discharged yet. She hated leaving them alone in those incubators, but they had to reach a standard weight before they could come home.

"The doctor said they're getting stronger every day. Being in the incubator is just like being in your belly," Maggie said, taking Janina's arm to comfort her. "Look how strong your babies are. They're not crying or fussing, they just want to get out of there soon. You're their mom, you have to be strong just like them."

The visiting time was short. Through the thick glass, Janina gazed reluctantly at her two babies, her heart filled with a mix of sorrow and guilt. When they were inside her, it hadn't felt quite real, but seeing these two living, breathing beings before her now stirred a complex storm of emotions.

She sniffled, forcing the bitterness down.

She spoke to her babies silently: “Be strong, my loves. Mommy is waiting for you to come home safe and sound.”

After completing the discharge process, Janina moved into a postnatal retreat with Grace accompanying her 24/7. Even with professional postpartum care staff, Grace was worried and needed to see her daughter at all times to feel at ease.

With the babies still in their incubators, the Holt brothers remained vigilant, continuing their 24-hour watch at the hospital.

Life at the postnatal retreat was calm, giving Janina time to think things through.
