Janina answered the phone quickly. "Hello, Mr. Merrick, is there a problem?"
On the other end of the line, Kenneth's voice was practically dripping with sycophantic charm. Though she couldn't see his expression, the sound of his overly pleasant tone came through the receiver loud and clear.
"Miss Holt, getting inside New Vista Medical Center won't be easy. What exactly do you want me to look into? Dr. Parnell's personal life or his work? I need the details so I can approach this correctly."
Janina rolled her eyes. He was just angling for more money.
"Both. His personal life and his work. I especially want to know about all the surgeries he's performed at New Vista over the last three years. How are those mothers now? And what about the babies they delivered?"
This was a job for a professional. She had considered going back to the police, but their investigation had yielded nothing. On the surface, New Vista was still a beloved hospital, and Dr. Parnell was still a hero in the public's eye. That meant either the hospital was in collusion with the police, or the police had taken a bribe to do a superficial, symbolic investigation.
Her only option was to investigate secretly, and a private detective was the perfect choice.
Kenneth understood immediately. This was a complicated case. Since he'd taken it on, he had to do it right.
"I can do it, but the price will be an additional ten thousand on top of the original fee."
"Fine. Deal." If two hundred thousand dollars could expose everything about Parnell, it was worth it.
Janina suddenly thought of Yvonne and gave Kenneth another lead.
"Also, look into his assistant, Madonna. They might be working together. On top of that, I saw Yvonne and her mother at Mercy General Hospital before, and they seemed very familiar with Dr. Parnell. You can follow that lead."
