After leaving Mrs. Thorne's apartment, Janina and Kenneth immediately headed to their next undercover visit, not stopping for a break.
They spent the entire day driving around under the hot sun.
It wasn't until nine o'clock at night that they finished with the last family.
They had made good progress. It was exhausting, but at least things were moving forward.
Too tired to eat, Janina and Kenneth got back in the car to debrief on the day's findings.
Kenneth handed her a bottle of water.
He flipped open his notebook, his tone heavy.
"Based on our interviews, all these mothers' babies were either born with some kind of defect or died shortly after birth. The families either never saw the baby, or they got one look at the bloody newborn and were too horrified to look again, so they agreed to let the hospital handle it."
He tapped his finger on the page, a hint of frustration in his voice.
"Did you notice? Every single family just assumed the hospital would cremate or bury the infant. No one ever followed up for details."
It made sense. When a baby dies in the hospital, the family's first instinct is to trust that the hospital will take care of the remains.
And to spare the mother more grief, no one would bring up the deceased infant again.
Janina tapped her finger thoughtfully against her phone. She had taken notes on everyone they had interviewed.
She pointed to the screen, which was filled with dense text.
"All the evidence we have so far points to Jensen. Look at this one—Ms. Waller. She gave birth to a boy in December. Jensen told the family the baby had a reproductive defect and convinced them to give up the child, which he then disposed of privately."
That family was poor and already had two sick elderly parents to care for. Another child with a defect would have been a crushing burden.
