Marjorie played the part of a concerned confidante to perfection. "I'm just thinking of you."
Mention of work instantly soured Winnie's good mood. He wanted to perform well for his boss, but the man just couldn't see his talent.
Winnie let out a long sigh. "It's not that easy. I'm so frustrated. Sometimes I think about how unfair it all is, and I just want to quit."
Sensing his resolve wavering, Marjorie pressed her advantage. "If I were you, I would quit. With your culinary skills, you'd be valued anywhere. Why chain yourself to The Tasting Room?"
Winnie fumbled for a cigarette from the pack and lit it.
Did he want to leave? Of course, he did! But he couldn't bring himself to give up the high salary.
Having been intimate with Marjorie, Winnie now saw her as one of his own and began to confide in her.
"Sigh, it's all about the damn money. The Tasting Room pays well. I'm not sure I could make this much anywhere else."
Marjorie traced circles on his chest with her finger, her voice slow and deliberate. "Why work for someone else when you could be your own boss? With your talent, if you opened your own restaurant, business would surely be even better than The Tasting Room's."
Her words ignited a spark of ambition in Winnie. Every chef dreamed of owning their own place. For most, the dream was crushed by a lack of capital. He was no exception.
He had the desire, but not the money. The thought of finances extinguished the fledgling hope in his eyes.
"It's not that simple. Opening a restaurant requires a huge investment. To compete with The Tasting Room, you'd need at least thirty or forty thousand dollars just to get started." He took a deep drag from his cigarette, a wave of resentment washing over him.
His boss, West, had been just a poor kid from the countryside less than a year ago, and now he was a business owner making tens of thousands a month. Winnie was clearly better off than West had been, so why wasn't he the one who'd made it big?
