The woman shot them a knowing look and continued.
“You think she’d behave? She’s out of money, that’s all. Winnie’s not working, so there’s no cash for her. She has no choice but to stay home. These last few days, Winnie’s been out every day, saying he’s looking for a location to start his business. His wife is already dreaming of being the boss’s wife, so she’s been treating him real nice.”
Seizing on the key point, West asked, “With his wife so deep in debt, does Winnie really have the money to open a restaurant? It doesn’t add up.”
The woman pursed her lips. “Didn’t I just say? It was probably a payout from his former boss. As for where he really got the money, I have no idea. Why don’t you go ask Winnie yourselves?”
At this, she gave Janina and West a chiding look, then asked curiously, “Aren’t you his colleagues? Didn’t your boss give you any severance pay?”
Janina and West were speechless.
The woman waved her hand and said in a worldly tone, “I’d advise you to stay away from Winnie. His wife is a menace. If anyone gets too close to him, she’ll chase them down and curse them out.”
Janina and West finally understood why Winnie’s wife had treated them with such hostility upstairs.
“I can’t chat anymore. My old man is at home waiting for me to cook dinner,” the woman said, standing up. She grabbed her bag and hurried toward the elevator, not forgetting to wave goodbye to Janina and West.
“Bye now!”
“Okay, thank you, ma’am. Goodbye.”
Janina and West quickly left the complex.
In the car, West immediately called a colleague who was on good terms with Winnie, asking him to try and get Winnie’s current location.
From what the neighbor said, Winnie was out looking for a retail space. If they followed him, they were sure to find a clue.
Winnie’s wife was in debt, yet he had money to open a restaurant. The whole thing was bizarre.
Before opening The Tasting Room, he had scouted many places, including Maple Road. At the time, he found the rent here too expensive and chose not to lease.
Judging by the size of the space, Winnie was planning a significant operation.
If he was opening a restaurant, it would be on a grander scale than The Tasting Room.
“I suspect someone is backing him. The payoff he received must have been substantial,” Janina said, voicing her suspicions aloud.
She remembered West once saying that Winnie had expressed interest in becoming the head chef at the new location.
His reason was simple: the head chef would earn an extra five thousand dollars. Winnie had been very straightforward about it, with no pretense.
But now, it seemed like a classic case of the farmer and the viper.
