The thought made her skin crawl.
Janina was about to call, but when she reached for her pocket, it was empty. Crap. Her phone was on the coffee table, much too close to the snake.
She looked at her sister. “Natalie, where’s your phone? Call 911, quickly!”
Natalie’s face mask had slipped off in her panic. Fumbling, she pulled her phone from her robe pocket and dialed.
The firefighters arrived in less than ten minutes. After a careful search, they successfully captured the small snake in the living room. Then, they found another one—a small green snake—tucked inside one of the gift bags.
Janina’s face was ashen. She couldn’t stop thinking about what might have happened if Liam and Joy had kept playing on the mat, if she hadn’t noticed the snakes in Liame.
“Where did these come from?” one of the firefighters asked, putting all the snakes into a secure bag. He looked at the shaken family. “You were all very careless. A bite from one of these could have been serious.”
“We have no idea where they came from,” Grace responded immediately. “We just found them. How could snakes get into this building?” Then, a thought struck her. “What kind of snakes are they? Are they venomous?”
The firefighter nodded grimly. “They’re venomous. You were lucky this was just a scare. Be more careful next time.”
“Yes, yes, of course. Thank you so much for your hard work.”
The firefighters prepared to leave with the bag of snakes, but Janina stopped them. “If they’re venomous, it means they aren’t someone’s pets. Could you please help us check the rest of these gift bags to see if there are any more…?”
