To be safe, the firefighters conducted a thorough search of the entire apartment. They checked every closet, cabinet, and under every bed. They even dismantled the washing machine to look inside. Finally, they confirmed that there were no other snakes besides the three they had captured.
After they left, Janina immediately called the police. If this was deliberate, it was no longer just a scare. It was attempted murder. With children and an elderly couple in the house, the perpetrator’s intent was clear: they wanted someone dead.
When the police arrived, Janina told them her suspicions directly. The snakes had come from the gift bags, which made the gift-givers the primary suspects. After taking her statement, the police promised a swift investigation.
By the time the police and firefighters were gone, it was nearly eleven o'clock at night. Even with the all-clear, no one felt safe sleeping in the house. The fear of a 'stray' snake still lingered. In the end, the entire family packed a bag and checked into a hotel for the night.
The next day, Ethan and Grace went out to buy snake repellent and hired a professional pest control service to inspect the house one more time from top to bottom.
Only after it was declared completely safe did they dare to return home, but a sense of unease still hung in the air.
Janina, however, went straight to the Aurelius Group building to confront Julius.
Unlike her last visit, she faced no resistance. The receptionist didn't ask if she had an appointment or try to stop her. After a quick call to Julius’s assistant, she was respectfully invited to go up.
A few minutes later, she reached the executive office and shoved the door open without knocking.
Julius was at his desk, head bowed as he signed a document, while his assistant, Wayne Wallace, stood respectfully nearby.
“Snakes? What snakes? Are you saying there were snakes in the gift bags?”
“What do you think?”
“That’s impossible!” Julius retorted instinctively. “How could there be snakes? It’s winter; they wouldn’t even be out. You must be mistaken!”
Janina knew he wouldn't believe her. She pulled out her phone and played the security footage she had saved, shoving the screen in his face. She had installed a nanny cam in the living room to keep an eye on Liam and Joy. She could check on them sometimes while she was at work. When she had copied the video that morning, re-watching the terrifying scene had made her sick with fear all over again. If she had been even a second slower, the first snake would have bitten Joy.
As Julius watched the video, the color drained from his face. His heart leaped into his throat. A wave of terror washed over him as he saw the snake emerge. Then, when he saw Janina snatch the babies and run, a profound sense of relief flooded him, immediately followed by a surge of pure, unadulterated fury.
