The New Year's bells chimed.
Since midnight, the sound of firecrackers had been nonstop, enveloping the world in a festive, joyous atmosphere.
The Holts set off their own firecrackers in the courtyard at eight in the morning.
Everyone had woken up early today. It was a tradition; you weren't allowed to sleep in on the first day of the new year.
Liam and Joy were dressed in festive new clothes. Liam wore an adorable tiger hat, and Joy had on a pink cat-themed one. Their bright eyes were filled with curiosity as they looked at everything, touching this and that.
One moment they were reaching for the tasseled lanterns hanging from the doorframe, the next they were asking an adult to lift them up to see the ice formations in the cracks of the stone walls.
The first thing everyone did upon waking was wish each other a happy new year. After breakfast, they all got on their phones to send greetings to friends and relatives.
"Happy New Year, Liam, Joy! Here are some red envelopes from Grandma and Grandpa."
Grace and Ethan placed the prepared gifts in the children's hands.
The two little ones grabbed the gift, looked at them curiously, and then promptly dropped them on the ground. They weren't cookies, so the toddlers had no interest in them.
"Hey, if you don't want them, your uncle will take them!"
Sutton Holt picked the envelopes up from the ground, teasing the two children.
Sutton was rarely home, so Liam and Joy were unfamiliar with him. He and Nolan Holt had arrived very late last night after the children were already asleep, and now they woke up to a tanned stranger.
The two kids' mouths trembled, and they burst into tears.
