Fern scoffed. She was so angry she had lost her appetite. She certainly wasn't in the mood to stay for lunch.
She picked up her child and stood up, fuming.
“I think you people did this on purpose, just to waste my time. I should have gone to the matchmaking session in the next village instead.”
With that, Fern stormed out, child in tow, without a backward glance.
The matchmaker heard the commotion and hurried over, only to see the scene and freeze in disbelief.
“What… what happened? Weren’t things going so well just a moment ago?”
Sutton smiled at the matchmaker. “Ma’am, my circumstances are too poor to meet her requirements. I think I heard her say she was heading to a blind date in the next village.”
When the matchmaker heard that, she panicked.
Oh no!
She clapped her hands together in dismay and immediately ran after Fern.
Soon after, the entire Holt family emerged in the living room. They had heard the entire conversation between Sutton and Fern.
Sutton wasn't particularly bothered, but he had to feign a little disappointment in front of his parents.
“You heard her. It’s better to be clear from the start than to force something that won’t work.”
Grace looked like she wanted to say something, but in the end, she just sighed.
“Don’t worry. We have more girls scheduled for this afternoon, this evening, and tomorrow. We’ll take it slow. We’ll find someone suitable.”
Sutton was stunned.
Sure enough, that afternoon, the matchmaker returned to the Holt family's living room with another woman.
But this time, the candidate wasn't for Sutton. It was for Nolan.
Nolan’s hackles rose. Weren't they supposed to be finding someone for his brother Sutton? How did it end up being him?
Inwardly, he was fuming. Wow, lady, first meeting and you go straight for the jugular. You may not be impressed with me, but I’m not impressed with you either!
Leila mentally rolled her eyes. She had no interest in a broke loser like him; a mere salesman was beneath her notice.
But…
She glanced down at her flat stomach.
She was running out of time. She had to find a reliable sucker to marry her, or her growing belly would soon be impossible to hide.
She recalled what the matchmaker had said: the Holt brothers were handsome and easy to manipulate, which made them barely acceptable candidates to be a father to her child.
Besides, waking up next to a handsome face like his wouldn't be a bad deal for her.
Leila composed herself, maintaining a polite smile. Her expression softened, and her eyes suddenly became full of affection.
“The salary doesn’t matter. I have a job too, after all. I won’t beat around the bush; we’re both adults, and I’m sure you know why we’re meeting today. My first impression of you is quite good. What about you? What do you think of me?”
