A few days later, Wendy's condition had improved, and her doctor said she could be discharged in another three days.
Throughout this time, Finch had not shown up. Janina, Maggie, and Melody stayed with her in the hospital room.
Wendy explained that she and Finch had a small fight over the check on New Year's Day, after which he had gone back to his company dorm.
He wasn't answering her calls or responding to her texts.
She had her pride, too. She didn't think she was in the wrong; she just wanted to verify the check at the bank. But before she could even get there, she received a call that Finch had been in a car accident.
She had been terrified. When she arrived at the scene, she saw that Finch had rear-ended someone. The other driver had minor injuries, but he was completely unharmed.
That evening, Finch had confronted her, accusing her of not trusting him, which was why she'd wanted to go to the bank.
At first, Wendy patiently explained that verifying a check of that amount was a reasonable precaution, just to confirm its authenticity.
But Finch had exploded, insisting that it meant she didn't trust him.
During her four days in the hospital, Wendy had a lot of time to think. She tried her best to calm herself and not dwell on the unpleasantness.
That afternoon, West Holt came to the hospital to drop off lunch. He happened to see Finch in the lobby of the inpatient building, but Finch stepped into an elevator without noticing him.
As the elevator doors closed, West waited for the next one. He glanced at the food containers he was carrying and thought, I didn't know Finch was coming, or I would have packed an extra meal.
Ever since Wendy was hospitalized, West had taken charge of their three meals a day.
The menu changed daily, and the food was both nutritious and delicious.
Initially, Maggie, Melody, and Wendy had protested. How could they let West make three trips a day to bring them food?
But West had insisted, “I’m not busy anyway, and you’ll get sick of the hospital cafeteria food.”
