Then, led by a hospital employee, the man and woman went up to the roof.
Janina watched them go, nudging Melody's arm. "That must be Jamie's mother and stepfather."
Melody nodded. "Jamie and her mother look a lot alike. I hope she can talk her down."
"Come on, let's follow them and see..." Janina suggested.
On the rooftop, Jamie heard her mother's voice and slowly lifted her head.
There was no joy or emotion in her eyes, only a hollow, cold emptiness.
It was as if she had lost all connection to the world.
Her gaze shifted, landing on the man in the suit standing ramrod straight. The moment Jamie's vacant, gray eyes fell on him, a flicker of something different appeared.
A sad smile suddenly touched her lips.
When she looked back at her mother, whose eyes were wide with panic and face stained with tears, Jamie's smile grew wilder.
"What are you doing here? To laugh at me? You're the ones who ruined me, and now you're pretending to love me? How pathetic!"
Jamie's face was filled with sorrow, and she practically screamed the words.
Despite the distance, her voice carried down clearly.
When the woman heard Jamie's words, her heart was viciously squeezed, the pain so intense she could hardly breathe. She wiped her face and pleaded softly, terrified of provoking her further.
"Jamie, what nonsense are you talking? Of course Mommy loves you. How could I ever want to hurt you? Just come down. Whatever you want, Mommy will agree to it, okay?"
"You're my most precious daughter. I'd rather get hurt myself than let anything happen to you. Please trust me, honey. Come down, and we'll go home. Whatever you want to do, I won't stop you."
The woman was sobbing, but she didn't dare take a step forward.
Janina, Maggie, and Melody had made it to the rooftop, but the staff's attention was so focused on Jamie that no one noticed them slowly ascending the last few steps.
It wasn't until they were standing behind Jamie's mother that the three of them stopped.
From this angle, they could clearly see Jamie's silhouette teetering on the edge.
When Jamie's mother heard what her daughter said, her eyes widened in disbelief.
She swayed and nearly fainted.
The man's face turned deathly pale. He probably never expected Jamie to reveal their shameful secret in public.
A flicker of panic crossed the man's eyes, but he still vehemently denied it.
"Jamie, what are you talking about? Don't say such crazy things. Just come down, and we can talk about this at home!"
