Wendy leaned back in her seat, her eyes closed, muttering something under her breath. Soon, she fell silent and began to doze off.
The car took a sharp turn.
Wendy's head lolled sideways, landing in West's lap, her hair spilling over his trousers.
West extended a finger, gently trying to nudge her head back up against the seat rest.
Another sharp turn.
Her head, which he had just propped up, fell right back into his lap.
"Take the turns a little slower, a little smoother," West called out to Natalie.
Natalie, not understanding the situation, thought her brother was criticizing her driving. "I'll get better with more practice," she retorted. "You'll just have to deal with it for tonight."
West was speechless.
The faint, sweet scent of her hair wafted up to him as Wendy's head settled more comfortably on his leg.
She shifted slightly in her sleep, and West felt his Adam's apple bob. He forced himself to look away, staring out the window.
He sat ramrod straight, not daring to move an inch, not daring to touch Wendy again, until the car finally came to a stop.
When they arrived home, Natalie helped Janina upstairs first. Janina was still able to walk, but she was swaying unsteadily.
Natalie struggled to support her with both hands as Janina slurred, "The Aurelius family is full of bastards! They want to take my babies? Not a chance!"
Janina slowly turned her head, her drunken gaze resting on Natalie's shoulder as she mumbled to herself, "Heh heh... Yvonne's baby isn't even Julius's. I hope he gets cheated on, too. Hahaha..."
Listening to her sister's rambling, Natalie tried to soothe her. "Nina, why are you even thinking about that jerk? It doesn't matter to us whether he gets cheated on or not. Shh, let's not talk about it."
Janina mumbled dazedly, "No, if he gets cheated on, he'll come after Liam and Joy..."
It took a great deal of effort for Natalie to finally get Janina settled into bed. Then she went to draw a bath to help Janina clean up.
Downstairs, in the car, West reached over to help Wendy out.
But she wouldn't budge.
