Janina gently patted her mother’s hand to comfort her.
“Fairchild performed some bloodletting on me earlier. He said I’ll be fine after a few days of treatment, but the poison in Liam and Joy is more severe. I think we should leave for the countryside tomorrow. It doesn’t feel safe here anymore.”
After a moment's thought, Janina added, “Land is the most likely suspect, so we have to keep Fairchild’s medical skills a secret from her.”
Grace and Ethan understood immediately, grasping the gravity of the situation.
A chill ran down Grace's spine. She couldn't believe Land was capable of this, and her eyes burned with a fiery rage.
“And I treated her like a sister. To think she was plotting against us behind our backs.”
Ethan’s face was terrifyingly dark. His hands clenched into fists, and he gritted his teeth. “If it really was her, I’ll skin her alive. How despicable!”
“I won’t let her get away with it either,” Janina said, a cold glint in her eyes. “I want to find out who’s pulling her strings.” Attacking children was something less than human.
“Then let’s call the police right now!” Grace urged.
Janina shook her head. “It’s no use. Fairchild said this poison is colorless and odorless; the hospital wouldn’t be able to detect it. The amount in our bodies is small. Even if we went for a check-up, it would just look like organ failure, not poisoning. Besides, this is all just speculation. We don't have any proof.”
Calling the police would only tip them off and expose Fairchild.
“Then what do we do?”
“We play along and use their plan to lure out the mastermind.”
Fairchild worked quickly. When Janina, Grace, and Ethan entered the room, they saw the dark, black blood that had been drawn from the children.
It was a horrifying sight.
Even with needles in their bodies, Liam and Joy didn’t stir, remaining deep in their slumber.
Grace and Ethan’s eyes both reddened. Seeing their grandchildren suffer like this, they wished they could bear the pain for them.
