After Peter and the others heard about Isabella and Ethan’s divorce, they figured Ethan would stop helping Isabella now that they were no longer married. That gave them the perfect excuse to show up, hoping to squeeze some money out of her and patch up their own financial mess.
As soon as they arrived in the city and started asking around, they found out Isabella had walked away from the divorce with hundreds of millions. Even Cynthia, the so-called jinx in the family, had gotten tens of millions and owned a bunch of properties and shops.
The George family could barely hide their jealousy. Seeing how much Isabella and her mom had, their greed only grew. They started plotting to do what they’d done over twenty years ago, after their son died. They wanted to snatch up his assets just like last time.
They told themselves Isabella was still family. Now that she was loaded, she was supposed to help out her relatives.
“Isabella, your company must be doing great these days,” her grandmother started. “Since you’re making plenty of money now, you don’t really need all those hundreds of millions from the divorce. Your uncles and aunts are struggling. Why don’t you give each family ten million? That won’t even make a dent in your fortune.”
Her grandmother kept going. “We’ll even leave a little for you. You’re single, you have a company, a house, a car, savings. How much can you really spend? Too much money is a burden. When you were born, your grandma had a fortune-teller check your fate. He said you’re too delicate for so much money, that too much wealth would crush you and make you sick.”
“When you get money, you should share it. Give it to your family. That’s the right thing to do. Your grandfather and I are getting old. You should bring us to live with you, take care of us, pay for my medical bills, and just give us a little pocket money every month.”
Each request became more ridiculous than the last.
Everyone rushed to make their demands, afraid they’d lose out if they didn’t speak up fast enough or ask for enough.
“When my dad was alive, he was nothing but kind to all of you. My mom always said he was a devoted son, too. The moment he died, how did you treat his wife and daughter?”
“If my uncle hadn’t shown up in time, you would’ve sold me and my mom off. We would’ve been separated forever. Do you even remember what you tried to do to her back then? Or did you just forget?”
“And now, all of a sudden, you show up because you know we have money. You want me to be the good granddaughter and take care of my grandparents for life. What, did all their other kids die? Am I the only grandchild left?”
“If every other child and grandchild is gone and I’m the only one left, fine. I’ll take on that responsibility and look after you both until the end. But in exchange, everything you own comes to me. That’s only fair.”
